The Google G Suite is a set of educational tools designed by Google. This group of tools is usually referred to as an LMS (Learning Management System) and it's purpose is to support student learning through the monitoring and sharing of student work. It is where assignments are set, resources are shared and where teachers give feedback.
It is important to note that this is different from our DMS (Data Management System). The DMS is where students personal information is stored. This includes contact information, medical records, attendance data, behaviour data and reports. Our DMS system is called Engage. Students have no interaction with the DMS.
We use GSUITE (Google For Education) as it allows us to move beyond the traditional paradigms of education and thus create a rich, dynamic and high quality learning environment. Teachers and Learners can work anytime and anywhere using a powerful set of tools; tools that allow for instant feedback and the tracking of progress to support personalised learning to take place.
Google Classroom is the main platform of the education suite. It allows for communication and workflow between teachers and students through a highly dynamic and interactive dashboard. It helps students and teachers organise their work as well as providing innovative ways of providing feedback. Parents can "opt in" to see weekly reports of work completed, upcoming deadlines and resources shared.
Google Drive is where student work is stored. It is cloud based so allows access wherever there is an internet connection. Students will not have a huge amount of interaction with Drive as the Classroom environment keeps everything organised for them.
Google Calendar offers an intuitive and easy to use calendar. All Google classroom assignments show up automatically on the calendar. This is very useful for both parents and students.
Google Mail is used as the login and the students school e mail account. Gmail for schools comes with a wide range of restrictions and options to help us monitor and secure student accounts. More detail on this is set out below. Please be advised that the student's email address will be deactivated upon their withdrawal from the school.
Google Docs is a word processing software that offers students the ability to collaborate, comment, correct and suggest edits live on the document. When combined with Google students and teachers are able to take workflow and sharing to new and exciting levels. Along with Docs the Google Suite also provides students with Slides (Presentations), Sheets (Spreadsheets) and Forms (surveys & quizzes)
Although the main focus for online learning will be around the Google workspace different subject areas may utilise a range of software that is specific to their specialist area. Any signup requirements will be done through a students school account and should not be accessed through personal email.
