Data Triangulation
These standardised assessments used from GL form just ONE part of the picture.
Cognitive Ability Test 4 - Aptitude assessment
Progress Test Maths / English - Attainment in comparison to the expected level for current age
New Group Reading Test - Current reading age
Pupil Attitude to Self and School
Along with these assessments, teachers use internal summative and formative assessments along with their professional judgment to monitor student progress. Their teaching is informed based on all of these measures.
Together, these assessments form a triangle of understanding—academic ability, progress, and emotional engagement. Each piece is vital, but it’s only when we consider all three that we can fully understand how to best support your child. The assessments help us ask the right questions about how to best support your child’s education. While the data provides valuable insights, it doesn’t offer final answers—just the information we need to understand each student better, ask better questions and guide their growth.
PASS - Pupil Attitude to Self and School
The PASS diagnostic assessment measures students' attitude to themselves as a person, their feelings of success, themselves as a learner and their attitude to the school environment.
The PASS data can be used in conjunction with a students Attitude to Learning rating on the internal school reports to identify any barriers they may have to their learning. For example, if it is seen that a student believes they are not capable, this may result in the student failing to attempt their work or they may not ask for help as they may feel 'stupid'.
CAT 4 - Cognitive Ability Test
Abilities tests, such as the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4), are designed to predict a pupil’s ability to succeed in an academic endeavour by evaluating verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial ability.
Teachers can use CAT4 scores to ascertain whether student performance in the classroom is indicative of their ability. They can modify their provision accordingly.
Progress Tests - Maths and English
Attainment test such as the Progress Test Series, are designed to measure the knowledge and skills from key areas of the curriculum pupils have learned in school, and to determine the progress they have made over a period of time.
Teachers are able to compare students progress tests results from one year to the next to determine if they tracking along the expected path.
Teachers will also look at student Progress Test results in comparison with their CAT4 assessment. This gives information about whether a student is performing in class with English and Math concepts as we would expect them to.
NGRT - New Group Reading Test
The NGT is an adaptive assessment, responding to a student’s ability as they complete the assessment so more able readers are challenged and weaker ones remain engaged. It provides information on student's reading skills compared to their age.
Teachers use the NGRT to identify where intervention may be needed and then to monitor impact and progress made. This is particularly important for our students whose English is not their native language.
