Prior to the visit to NTUC Nursing Home, the pupils had 3 training sessions in school where they learn about how to interact with the elderly and to plan activities for them when they visit them at the home. The pupils were so excited and they suggested to fold a paper crane with the elderly. Nevertheless, the pupils try hard to fold the cranes themselves and it was heartening to see the elderly participating in the activity too. Some of them could only use one of their hands but yet they try hard to fold the papers.
After some time trying to fold the papers, some pupils struggled themselves as they were also having troubles folding the crane. We changed to another activity and played games with the elderly. They played several games including BINGO, guessing game using cups and dice, throwing ping pong balls into the cups, throwing ball darts and memory game.
We took some feedback from the elderly and they enjoyed the activities and company of our pupils. Some of them said that they would like us to come on a daily basis! That was great to hear!
The pupils who went also presented the plant to the nursing home. These plants were made using recycled water bottles during science lesson.
After the visit, pupils did a reflection and they said that they enjoyed the interaction with the elderly and they had learnt more about them through this visit.
