In this unit learners explore how data is transferred over the internet. Learners initially focus on addressing, before they move on to the makeup and structure of data packets. Learners then look at how the internet facilitates online communication and collaboration; they complete shared projects online and evaluate different methods of communication. Finally, they learn how to communicate responsibly by considering what should and should not be shared on the internet.
Data packets
We were introduced to the concept of packets. We completed an activity based on transferring an image across the internet, to see that as well as messages (text), other types of data (images, video, and audio) are also transferred over the internet.
Online workshop: Barclay's Code Playground
With Barclay's Code Playground we used code to raise awareness for our ocean’s whales, dolphins and porpoises, of which UK and European waters are home to a third of the world’s species. In partnership with ORCA, we took part with an online session run by Barclay's coding with conservation in mind. We used Scratch, ‘selection’ and ‘conditions’ to help (our sprite) whales catch fish and avoid some man-made hazards.
