I grew up in the city of Jakarta. Growing up, I always loved to travel outside of the country. My mom used to attend seminars outside town, and we always joined her to travel. I was also given books, mostly magazines from my grandfather, who used to be a ship captain. He would always travel a lot outside the country, and he told me all about the amazing things he saw and
experienced. I have always wanted to be like him and see the world for myself. Almost all of my family members lived outside Indonesia (Uncle, Cousins, Another Cousin, etc), so for most of my life, I have predominantly only seen the exquisite places outside Indonesia and have never really appreciated the beauty of my own country in addition to my lack of knowledge and local travels.
Sources note that not many tourists visit or choose to travel to Indonesia, but Indonesia’s tourism remains to be an important aspect of the Indonesian economy. It is also an essential source of foreign exchange revenue, so I have decided that for my personal project, I will be creating a travel book as a way to promote tourism in my country. For this project, moreover, I am going to travel, research, and photograph different places in Java as a way to promote tourism in one of the loveliest places in Indonesia. This project seems quite challenging because it might be difficult for me to gather information from experts and to go out to the different places myself as a way of learning more about the place - Java.
I chose to make this project firstly because it gives me an opportunity to explain all the wonders that are available from where I reside, especially Java. It also gives me an opportunity to get to know my country better (i.e. places, people, culture, food, etc). Creating a travel book will also give readers, local or foreign, a better perspective or a better view of what Java actually has to offer. This project also benefits me in a way that it could help me improve my writing skills, especially in persuasion because my objective for this project is to promote tourism in Java or Indonesia as a whole through insights, research, and images.
The Global Context that relates with my Personal Project (PP) is Personal and Cultural Expressions. This global context focuses on the expression of ideas, culture, feelings, and beliefs. The travel book that I plan on creating will explore the ways in which individuals express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, and beliefs. By making my travel book I wish to able further extend my appreciation towards my own surrounding and culture itself. My product will portray the beauty of my country, Java to be more specific, and it will also show how history has shaped Indonesia to become what it is today, hence I chose the global context personal and cultural expression.
I gained a deeper understanding of the global context I was addressing, personal and cultural expression, while working on the project, and I learned how a lot of people have different ways in exploring ideas regarding their feelings, nature, and culture. I also learned a better way to appreciate our own country and the surroundings that we are born in. Along with doing this task, I learned lots of good useful techniques and further improved some current ones such as ability to manage my time effectively, my social skills, and writing ability. Reflecting back on the global context which is personal and cultural expression, I have gained a deeper understanding through the interviews of multiple people in ways that people enjoy and express their culture. I also learned more about how human relationships including families, friends, and the community surrounding us help shape our culture and build the country that we are today. I think I was able to show my appreciation of my culture by making these travel books and learning more on the history that have shaped our country. Misconceptions can give rise to many problems, particularly because we live in a multicultural world. You know why people do things exactly the way they do by studying and knowing different cultures. You understand and empathize with their condition as you identify with other individuals coming from different countries.

Throughout the process of finishing my personal project, I am also continuously expanding my IB learner profiles skills. Although the application of each IB profile was important throughout the entire process of making a travel book, the IB learner profiles that i developed the most throughout this project were communicator, and inquirer.
The purpose of my personal project is to create a travel book that includes all the attractions and their history which can be gained by museums and research. After that, I had to communicate with my classmates and supervisor in order to gain feedback from them, which implied that I had to deal with lots of interaction. IB learners are utilized to conduct themselves openly and freely as a communicator; to communicate effectively; to pay close attention to the experiences of other people. This can be implicated in my travel book by researching experiences of other people and making use of that in order to successfully achieve my goal which is to promote. It was essential for me to gain ample knowledge and input from my supervisor, media, and friends in return for my success of the project. So in conclusion communication is the essence of my product.
I also had to inquire about making my travel book since analysis of the things being read, information gained from visiting museums, etc is required in exchange for my travel book to succeed. I was determined to start this task to the best of my knowledge and abilities. I learned a great deal about the research, writing, and artistic elements of my project and developed my abilities through that. I have further established and developed my natural curiosity, and I have also gained the skills needed to perform research and demonstrate learning independence. I actively enjoy learning and this ability to collect data that will be preserved throughout my life.
