My learning goal is to learn how to write a clear, cohesive and informative piece of writing while in the process also learn about economics and its role in social movements.
Growing up in a household that prides itself on education has influenced me greatly in my decision on what to do for Personal Project and my own future. I was always surrounded by incredibly hard-working people who were well versed in academic subjects and encouraged discussion on social issues which led to my own passion for the social sciences. Since I was young I always found myself debating and discussing many important social and political issues with my family. One issue that interested me in particular was feminism, since I was surrounded by mostly women who taught me a lot like my older sister and my mother. Both are strong, hardworking, and determined women who have accomplished a lot in their lifetime. In particular, I looked up to my sister a lot throughout my childhood, and even until now, she has always imbued a sense of independence and resilience in me that I will always cherish. She also taught me a lot about feminist values and topics such as misogyny, systematic gender discrimination and the hardship women go through around the world, planting it in my head to go actively fight against the patriarchy and for myself.
My mother and older sister both work in the field of economics which heavily inspired me to talk about the intertwining relations of economics and the women’s rights social movement. I, myself, am also interested in taking a social science course for my undergraduate, mainly intending to take philosophy, politics, and economics to broaden my perspective of humanity and its intricacies which is also another reason why I chose this as my learning goal. I find this project as somewhat of a test to see my dedication and commitment to the subject so that I can figure out if this is truly something I see myself doing for the majority of my life. Due to these influences in my life, I have decided to take on a learning goal that mainly focuses on broadening my knowledge in economics and its social consequences.
My product will be a commentary and insight book about economic empowerment through the lens of the women’s rights movement. Which discusses its historical context as well as its presence in today’s society. The final chapter will then consist of a conclusion to the information presented in the book where I will give my final thoughts regarding the subject matter.
I chose to write a book encompassing all of my research and analysis about the topic due to the fact that a book is the most efficient medium to express all of my ideas in detail and in a semi-formal method without losing a lot of the creativity and visual aspects. The book will explain concepts like feminism, economics, and gender discrimination throughout four chapters that will also include my own analysis and conclusion. The target audience of this book is teenagers to young adults since I want this book to be easy to understand and inclusive. This product is of great importance to me since it is a representation of my own hard work and a showcase of my personal limitations. I hope that by the end of this project I can reassure myself of my skills and my passion.
My final product is a four chapter book discussing the underlying relationship between feminism, gender discrimination and economics. Specifically, it informs the reader in greater detail about the impact that gender discrimination has on economics and vice versa. I designed the book myself and I chose it to be colorful with large fonts for it to be more interesting and easier to read for students around my age and even younger. The book starts off with an author's note that explains the reasoning behind why I chose this product for my Personal Project. The first chapter is titled, “History and Introduction to Feminism” this chapter introduces the reader to gender discrimination, gender roles, feminism and its history. The second chapter titled “Economic Discrimination” talks about what is economic discrimination, and the two main forms of discrimination that women face related to economics which are the gender pay gap and the lack of access to education that women have globally. The third chapter is all about economic empowerment where it explains what it is and how to economically empower women. The final chapter is a sort of conclusion and analysis of all of the information given in the previous chapters and I impart my final thoughts on gender discrimination and the economic position women are placed in.
Through creating this book, I was definitely able to further hone my writing, research, analyzing and organizational skills which I will value and take with me in my future endeavors, whatever it may be. I completed the book on time, I got a deeper grasp on a topic I am interested in and I solidified my choice on wanting to pursue a career in similar academic fields which concludes that I was able to achieve my product and learning goals as well as the main purpose of this project which is to grow and explore my capabilities.
My overall evaluation of my final product is that all of the success criteria was at least met to a certain extent. Although due to my ambitions, I’ll always think that there is room to improve especially in the way I communicate my ideas and the general quality of my work. This was my first try at writing a book on my own so in the end I’m still proud of the skills I’ve learnt by the end of the product creation process and my final results. The book was still able to fulfil its purpose of informing the audience regarding feminism and gender discrimination in economics through a format that is interesting to read and helps emphasize the ideas presented in the content. If I had more time, I hope in my next try that I would go into even more depth about all of the intricacies of the topic since I feel like this is still quite relatively a surface level introduction to such broad concepts. In conclusion this Personal Project is an overall success and was beneficial in educating me on my strengths and weaknesses as well as furthering my personal interests.
