The Personal Project is executed by MYP Year 5 students to develop their interests and talents. It showcases and applies the skills students have learned throughout their MYP years into a project-based assessment that explores and expresses their favorite interests. Students produce a product or outcome in any form. The Personal Project formally assesses ATL skills and the IB Learner Profile.
The Personal Project aims for students to inquire, act, and reflect.
Inquire: Students explore an interest that is personally meaningful and take ownership of their learning by undertaking a self-directed inquiry.
Act: Students transfer and apply skills in pursuit of a learning goal and the creation of a product.
Reflect: Students recognize and evidence personal growth and development.
Students address personal project objectives through:
the process they follow.
the product or outcome they create.
the report or presentation they make that explains what they have done and learned.
The goal statement is the basis of the Personal Project which the student develops according to their own personal interests. It should be highly challenging and deeply relate to a global context to lead to greater learning. All goals should be S.M.A.R.T. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.
Students document their project work in a process journal, which helps students record and learn from their work, and it promotes academic honesty. As a record of progress, journals can take many forms and can be recorded in a variety of media. They represent an evolving record of plans, ideas and accomplishments.
The product or outcome is the main element of the Personal Project. It can take many forms, from a personal achievement like achieving a set level of profiency in a new language or a fitness goal to writing a book or composing music. Take a look at the projects from this year for ideas.
By the end of the project, students are required to submit a report that presents how they had completed the project. It demonstrates the student’s engagement by summarizing the experiences and skills they developed throughout the process and consists of 3 criteria: (A) planning, (B) applying skills, and (C) reflecting.
MYP’s Global Context is the distinctive core of a Personal Project. Students may design their Personal Projects with any of these in mind.
