As a little kid, I would always watch my mom get ready every morning. A step she would never miss was her makeup routine. I was always mesmerized by the way she’d put on her different makeup products and how beautiful she looked. I wanted to look like her, so not long after, I would play around with makeup myself. I spent my days doing makeshift makeup tutorials and pretending to be a beauty guru. To this day, I am still very passionate about makeup and use it almost daily. I spend my free time doing makeup, constantly learning different makeup techniques. Along with that, I’ve always had a growing interest in social media. I got Instagram and YouTube at a very young age and started posting on those platforms. Albeit no longer posting on YouTube, from time to time I would post my makeup looks on my personal Instagram account for fun. I find joy in sharing my creations online and it’d always give me a sense of confidence when people enjoy them. For these reasons, I knew it was a perfect idea for my Personal Project to mix those two interests together. I decided that my learning goal would be developing my makeup skills and learn how to handle a social media platform by creating different makeup looks and posting them online.
My product for my Personal Project is an Instagram account dedicated to different makeup looks I will be creating. This is a perfect project for me because it is a mix of my two interests, social media and makeup. After some consideration, I decided that this Instagram account will vary in content, ranging from Instagram posts to Instagram reels. My makeup looks will mainly focus on abstract and editorial makeup looks, focusing more on the artistic portion rather than everyday makeup looks. This is because I don’t want my looks to be limited. I want to be able to express myself and my creativity as much as I can with each makeup look. I want to be able to tell a story, and to me, the only way I can do that is by doing abstract makeup.
Growing up, I was bullied for not looking a certain way. People always called me names behind my back and I’ve always felt undesirable. I remember always looking in the mirror and genuinely thinking I looked like the ugliest person in the world. In hindsight, an 11-year-old should not be worrying about beauty standards, however, with the unrealistic expectations society has always had on young girls, it was inevitable. I’ve always had self-image issues that stayed with me even to this day. Due to that, I found the world of makeup. Makeup quickly became the one thing that never failed to bring me confidence. It became my form of leisure, my passion, and my escape from reality. It always brought me joy and self-assurance, so I wanted to share that feeling with others. Being able to share that experience with my close friends through this project made me feel so good about myself. I remember the confidence they felt during the photoshoots, and that is something I will forever appreciate. In these past months, I have learned a lot. Initially, I thought that this project would solely help me develop my makeup skills, but I learned much more than that. I was able to learn about photography, content-creating, picture editing, and much more. This project mostly challenged my creative thinking skills and my problem-solving skills. I learned how to improvise while still achieving my end goal (and sometimes even better). What started as a simple project, turned out to be something I genuinely love to do and plan to continue. As my product creation progressed, Dvglam became much more than a school project to me. This account brought up a lot of opportunities for me as an amateur makeup artist. I got a good amount of recognition and even had a few people ask me to collaborate. Friends and acquaintances would ask me to be their makeup artist/photographer for their own projects. I was constantly bombarded with compliments from friends, family, and even complete strangers every time I posted a new picture. I felt recognized, something I don’t feel often. Dvglam made me realize my talent, and I’m so proud to say I created it.
My final product is an Instagram account consisting of 12 looks and 4 concepts. Each makeup look represents me and the different words I would use to describe me. Although each of the looks was created by me, I did take a lot of inspiration from different makeup artists. My biggest inspiration from the start of this whole project is this makeup artist called Dolli (@dolli.glam/@dolli.pro on Instagram). Even before I started my product, I always find myself going back to her account. During the product creation, I always had the way she styles her models and takes their pictures in mind. I tried my best to stay true to the concept always reminding myself of the style and mood I wanted to go for. Additionally, I always referenced back to my success criteria to make sure that I was always meeting those expectations. Overall, I think I created a successful and well-made product. For a person with my skill-set and knowledge of makeup, I did a satisfactory job albeit needing some improvements. My main weakness is my time management skills and consistency. If I had managed my time better, I would have been able to create more and stay more consistent. I did spend a longer time on certain photoshoots and makeup looks, while others were slightly rushed. I would also have more content and could’ve done more with the account if I strictly stuck to my schedule. Despite all the hardships, I’m still very please by what the end product looks like and I’m proud I was able to push through.
