My goal for this project is to promote and showcase lesser known local artists in Jakarta through an online radio show that I would produce and host. My radio show will feature artists from different genres to expand the variety of music local Indonesians are exposed to. This is for the hopes that more people with different tastes in music will tune in to my radio show and be aware of the diversity of music in our local culture.. From the beginning, a realistic targeted goal is to feature 3 artists with unique performances and genres. The genres of artists I aim to feature are hip hop, R&B, house, and techno. Although the genres of the DJ’s I wish to aim for are limited I would also like to feature artists who play in other subgenres.
The project will be extremely challenging for me since I would be the host and producer of my radio show. Also, I am an introvert so I would have to learn how to be a proper host conducting interviews with guests that I am not so familiar with. This would also be my first time producing a proper video series to be presented. Additionally, finding artists that will pass my standards as artists will be quite hard to find.
The global context I chose to fit with this project is personal and cultural expression. I chose personal and cultural expression to be the global context fitting with my project because the guests featured on the radio show will be able to express themselves in the form of music, for the urban music culture in Jakarta. I’ve had a big interest in music for a long time and have seen several radio shows on the internet that inspired me to make this project. Strands to be further developed under this context are artistry and craft. Through the interviews, viewers would be able to know how these artists formed their own sound. These artists will also explain deeply their creative process on making music, and the struggles behind it.
My personal project’s final product is a radio show featuring local artists from Jakarta. The radio show’s name is Midari Radio. The radio show focuses mainly on lesser known artists in Jakarta that are coming up in the music scene. I tried to make my radio show as diverse as possible so I hosted different types of artists such as vocalists, producers, DJ’s and many more.
My radio show consists of three episodes, the first episode featuring a producer and rapper duo named Ahmad and Zomnia. The second episode features a musical collective group named Kita Collective, there were vocalists, producers, sound engineers, and a visual creative. The third and last episode features a DJ and producer named Boyboujee. The project responds well to my own rubric and set of criteria. It completes every detail required in the rubric. I carefully chose the requirements to make it challenging yet reasonable for me to complete using my product. I am sure to get good grades on my product based off of my rubrics.
My project can be used as a platform for artists to spread their music to a wider audience. My project responds to the global context of personal and cultural expression by having the artist express their artistic creations through an interview and talent showcase. Through my project the artist could explain their music that they put their thoughts and feelings in.
After working on my project I have gained a lot of new skills, improvement, and experience. It was a long 4 months of hard work, dedication, and focus. Since I interviewed and talked with a handful of people in the music industry, my knowledge on my topic which is music has increased. They have taught me how business in the industry is done, how relationships work, the process of making music, and many more. Although I learned a lot after meeting with the artists, I have a pretty solid understanding of music prior to the project.
The global context personal and cultural expression best reflects my personal project because music is a way for the artists to express their thoughts and feelings. I have understood this Global Context better after interviewing the artists. For the artists music is a way for them to express themselves and to tell a story or message. Their experiences and thoughts are what differentiates them from other artists. Each artist tells a different story, which produces a different sound. All these realizations correlate to the global context’s strands of craft and artistry, concepts which my final product celebrated throughout the project.
As an IB Learner, several skills of mine have improved throughout the project. Throughout this project I’ve improved several pockets on being a communicator, being a risk-taker, being knowledgeable, being balanced, being a thinker, and being open-minded.
Though it’s hard to pin down major profiles developed, I am glad that I’ve enhanced my IB profiles even in baby steps or minute processes. I am proud of these developments.
Firstly, I’ve improved my communication skills after reaching out and interviewing the artists. Secondly, I’ve improved on my risk-taking skills after reaching out to artists I don’t know since it’s stepping out of my comfort zone. Thirdly, I’ve improved on being knowledgeable by conducting proper research before and throughout the project.
Additionally, I’ve improved on balancing my regular life and my PP endeavors, and also I’ve improved on my thinking skills by formulating the whole concept and questions for the interview very rigorously. Lastly, I’ve improved on being open-minded after accepting ideas given by the artists during the interviews, something that I was not accustomed to before.
