During quarantine I stayed at home a lot and I saw my mom watching Netflix and something caught my eye. It was apparently a TV series about a competition between designers, I became so curious and started watching it with my mom, this was something very new for me. After a while I realised that I was really interested in this topic. So I took this opportunity to try something different, to make it unique. I had to find a problem that I could express through the design I'm going to make.
My curiosity led me to find a topic that can relate to my project which was fast fashion because fast fashion has caused a lot of problems to the environment, such as the waste they produce from mass productions. A lot of people are not aware of this problem, this is something that should be taught because it is very serious. I learned that this topic has not been spread and a lot of people are ignorant towards this situation. Which motivated me to find a way to create an impact that could share awareness about this situation. With my personal project, I aim to create and design my own clothing line using recycled materials to promote sustainability. Thus the aim of the project may be challenging but I think this will be worth doing and making. It will require a lot of research and practice, to make and design the clothings according to the theme.
I chose this project because I wanted to educate people about the situation that we are facing, through designing clothes. I hope this project would make people realise about the situation that is happening and they would be more aware.
The Global Context I think that relates the most to my PP project is Globalization and sustainability . The reason why I think this is the most relatable Global Context is because it focuses on The impacts of decision making on mankind and the environment . The issues that I would be exploring clearly mirrors the Global context since nowadays fast fashion has already affected the environment in a negative way because of mass production and the fact that we all support it.
My final products are 3 different kinds of outfits made out of unused clothes, each of the outfits has its own uniqueness and it is shown in two different aspects. First the outfits have different styles and second are the different meanings, in each of the outfits I wanted to showcase how fast fashion can affect the environment.
Each one of the final products has its own unique design. I tried to make one traditional outfit, one with pants and also one in the form of a skirt/ dress. All of the outfits I made have a short but straight forward meaning that is related to the problem I’m trying to convey.
I surely think that my product was able to reach the requirement of the global content: Globalization and sustainability because my final product was able to showcase one of the strands from the global showcase, such as human impact on the environment and also diversity.
This project has taught me a lot of valuable skills. I also got a more in depth meaning of the global context I chose for this project Globalization and sustainability. The global context I chose made me realise how our daily life purchases especially in clothings causes a lot of bad effects to the environment. With the new information I received I got to understand more about our earth condition and what we humans have done.
Even though this wasn't process wasn't that long, I feel like I’ve improved so much, in different kinds of aspects. I’ve learned a lot about what I was capable of in the world of fashion, and it also expanded my knowledge about designing clothings. This also taught me to be disciplined and to have better time management skills. This was definitely very interesting and different for me but I surely enjoy the whole process of making the product. PP project would help me improve as an IB student become the best of the best for myself.
IB learner profiles play such a big role in this project because we all need those skilled in our project in order to create a successful project. Four of the IB learner profiles I used are risk taker, thinker, communicator and inquiry . Those four IB learner profiles were mainly used for my project because this project mainly focuses on creativity and trying something new.
I personally think risk takers play such a big role because I was willing to take all of the risk from doing something I’ve never experienced. This project was something I would never have imagined doing because of the possibility of failing, which made me really scared but I was able to succeed and finish it. Which was a very big accomplishment for me.
Since I’ve never done anything like this project I had to be creative on what I’m supposed to do. Which is why the IB Learner profile thinker was very much needed in this project because there were alot of new things I’ve just learned and discovered.
Being a communicator is a very important skill considering the situation right now, with this it would be way more easier for me to do my project. Since this skill is very important I definitely applied this skill during the process of my project . I had to communicate with my supervisor, private tutor teacher, interviewer and also my parents which was very important for the key to make a good project.
Lastly is inquirer, this IB learner profile focuses on research/investigation which was very important because I needed to research a lot about my topic since I have zero knowledge of. Which is very important. The goal of my project is to research and make my own outfit using recycled materials which is why all of the IB Learner profile above is never much needed in this process.
