A luxury that many of us overlook daily is the ability to keep ourselves fed and healthy without having to worry about what it costs us. Yet hundreds of thousands of people do not have this luxury, and while this is an issue that cannot be solved overnight, I want to try my best to assist in its resolution. Thus, my goal is to research about malnutrition in rural parts of Indonesia and create a video series containing useful information on how to combat malnutrition, accompanied with a supporting mobile website layout.
I consider this goal challenging because nutrition isn’t something I am very knowledgeable in; rather, more artistic things like writing short stories and composing music are what I am better at. I would have to research further into the topic, and branch out to professionals in the field of nutrition, who I would have to interview and communicate with.
In addition, I have never created informational videos before, nor have I edited them, and so this will be my first time making them using research I collected myself. Creating a website layout is also something I have minimal experience in, especially one that is supposed to be informational.
The final products that will hopefully come out of this will be two informational videos discussing stunting, which is a physical development issue caused by malnutrition, and another video explaining and giving examples of sources of different vitamins and nutrients that are common in Indonesia. In addition, there will be six recipe videos, which will include affordable and healthy recipes that I create myself with the help of a nutritionist and my own personal research. Finally, there will be the website layout, which will contain various useful pages and features. Since my goal states that I will be making a website layout instead of a fully functioning one, I will not spend too much time inserting content, and instead simply provide a plan for what type of content would go into each page.
The global context I chose for this is “Fairness and Development.” This global context fit my project the most as it relates to how families living under different circumstances often aren’t able to maintain healthy lifestyles due to restrictions such as environmental and financial complications. This often leads to the development of health problems and handicaps in the future. Children under the age of 5 are most susceptible to these diseases, as their immune systems have not developed enough to reject most bacteria and viruses. More often than not, mothers are the primary caretakers of their babies. They must be the ones who take precautions before, during, and after pregnancy to ensure their baby’s health. Because of this, I decided to make expecting mothers, pregnant mothers, and mothers with children the target audience of my output. If my output were to be expanded and improved even after its submission, it would continue to heavily reflect the “development” part of the global context, as it has the potential to become, at the very least, a small campaign to combat malnutrition.
The final product consists of a video series with 7 videos: 1 informational video providing 5 tips to prevent stunting, and 6 recipe videos for a simple and healthy snack and breakfast menu. In addition to the videos, my final product also consists of a website layout that consists of the following pages and features:
i. “Information About Stunting” Page – Contains an embed of my first informational video, “5 Tips to Prevent Stunting,” along with the definition of stunting. There is additional text describing the planned content for the page.
ii. “Recipes” Page – Contains an index of the 6 recipes I curated and recorded videos for. This page is already semi-functional and interactive.
iii. “Nutritional Information Table” Page – This table was originally intended to contain only 2-3 rows of information on ingredients, the vitamins they contain and their price. However, I had to modify my plans for my output after deciding not to make a second informational video. Thus, this information table serves as a reference tool to assist mothers that usually need to shop for their family’s daily meals but aren’t always aware of the fluctuating market prices. It also helps inform mothers about different sources of vitamins and nutrients.
iv. “Videos” Page - Contains an embed of my “5 Tips to Prevent Stunting” video, as well as the recipe videos. On this page, the 3 breakfast recipes are combined into one video, and so are the 3 snack recipes.
v. “External Websites and Sources” Page - While my output touches up on information regarding malnutrition and stunting, it is still unable to address every question that the target audience may have about it. This page of my website layout exists in order to provide extra sources of information to users who may still have further questions about malnutrition and stunting.
My product was able to reflect the global context chosen, “Fairness and Development,” as it made use of different approaches that could be used to combat the issue of malnutrition and stunting in Indonesia even if the target audience comes from low-income households. When doing research and creating my product, I kept the “...access to equal opportunities...” aspect of my global context in mind. I made sure that the advice that I included in my videos could be easily applied by different groups of people. My website layout explores different features and pages that could assist in providing equal education about stunting and the other topics covered.
One thing that the product is missing is the informational video about different sources of nutrition. After I did more assessment of my checklist and time frame, I came to the conclusion that it would end up consuming too much of my time, and hindering my productivity on the other parts of my output. Thus, I replaced the second informational video with a more detailed nutritional information table on my website layout.
I did not expect to end up as attached to this project as I ended up being. Communicating with so many different people, creating a product that turned out to be well-received by both the target audience and the general public, receiving input that helped me reflect on my strengths and weaknesses; these were all experiences that I gained through this project, and they truly made me realize that there are always opportunities to help others.
As previously mentioned, I chose the goal statement to research about malnutrition in rural parts of Indonesia and create a video series containing useful information on how to combat malnutrition, accompanied with a supporting mobile website layout because it aligned with my career goals for the future. Experiencing just a preview of what it is like to work in the public health department encouraged me to continue this project even after its submission; to update the different pages, to upload new recipe videos regularly, to add new features, and hopefully, to create a product that can genuinely help the future generations of Indonesia.
Out of all the IB learner profiles, I believe that this project helped me become a better communicator and thinker. I was able to break out of my shell and communicate with the women in Yuli’s village, while also listening to their input and improving my product based around. Although I encountered many problems and crossroads while creating my personal project, I was able to come up with methods that pulled me out of each one, and I managed to create a product that I could be proud of regardless of how challenging my goals were.
