I have loved dancing since childhood. I always love to see people dancing. In some kind of way, it leads me to an exciting feeling that I can’t really express. I like to dance with or without music and my parents noticed my interest in dancing. They introduced me to several types of dances like Zumba, ballet, and cheerleading. In 2015, I discovered street dancing on my own. Knowing that I am interested in and wanting to learn it further, I convinced my parents to support me. As I entered the world of street dance, I learned varieties of genres like Hip-Hop, Locking, Popping, Waacking, House, Break Dancing, and Krumping along with modified genres like Contemporary. However, I found that Hip Hop and Contemporary represent me the most, whereas in 2019 I was being trusted to become a dance teacher.
The virus Covid-19 has threatened the entire world and during this pandemic period, people can no longer go to the gym or have physical outdoor activities. Hence, it is confirmed that there are plenty of health issues that happened in this quarantine period. In this case, I decided to create a fun physical exercise in the form of dance that people can take to maintain their health.
As now everything is going online, I decided that my personal project would be a YouTube series of dancing exercises that targeted young people who can’t go out to exercise. In my project, I will share the knowledge of dance, which include its history, choreographies, basics and tips from my experiences. The video will be divided into different levels to make it easy to follow for the audience.
My goal for this project is to explore and research health issues related to the pandemic. Then create an educational YouTube series that utilizes dance exercises as a home fitness solution.
This is a highly challenging project because having no experiences in making a YouTube channel will require critical thinking and further research. In this project, I need to make videos with interesting concepts in order to attract viewers. The technical skills will also be needed to make videos with a very good quality. Through this project, I hope I can help a lot of people who are having health issues and also to encourage them to stay healthy by exercising and entertain them during this pandemic situation.
The global context of my Personal Project is identities and relationships. I believe that physical fitness exercises are very important to people’s health and cannot be stopped during the pandemic situation. There are different ways to do exercises, and dancing is a physical exercise that is fun to do and can be done indoors. In this case, the global context identities and relationships relates to my Personal Project as my goal is to become a home fitness solution through YouTube. And with this, I can teach my family and friends who live in different parts of Indonesia and I hope my YouTube can also reach people worldwide to help them doing exercises.
I created an educational YouTube series or channel called “QDNC” which utilizes dance exercises as my final product. As I have planned previously, I created seven videos which consist of channel introduction, sharing session, stretching and warming ups, dance exercises and choreographies which is divided into three levels: basic, intermediate and advanced with an addition of dance foundation workout. I chose to divide it into levels so that the viewers will be able to match their capabilities, learn from the beginner step, and able to follow it easily. I also stated the video duration and further content details which is estimated to last for 7-10 mins which is included with the intro, content, and outro. Since a home fitness solution is the goal of this product, I decided to make it as simple as possible so that people can easily do it at home and still get the same knowledge as in face to face. I created my video and thumbnails through Canva on my own. However, I asked a friend to help me with recording and editing as my assistant for completing this product.
When I started doing this project, I gained new knowledge, challenges, and was able to overcome problems and find solutions. Through this project, it taught me that during this pandemic situation won’t stop me to always be creative. In this case, I gained more understanding about my global context which is identities and relationships. I learned how bond it is between the connection of ourselves, our body, and our surroundings where us as human beings can be influenced by the situation itself. Since the goal of my project is to become a solution in this typical situation, my Personal Project expanded my concern and thoughts to keep people staying healthy by engaging them through home exercises and sharing my dance knowledge to others.
Throughout this project, I gained new skills like communication, editing, and organizing skills and I was able to hone them at the same time. Although, the skill that I learned the most is time management. In this project, I learned how to manage my time effectively since I’m having a hectic schedule for both school and out of school activities. I learned that I need to have a stable productivity and not procrastinate in order to complete my Personal Project on time.
As an IB learner, we should always develop and hone our learner profiles. Throughout this project, being a Risk taker is one of the profiles that improved myself as an IB learner since I have never created a YouTube channel which is something out of my comfort zone. It is a risky project to take as I myself have little experience in editing, which I personally am worried that I am not able to produce good video editing. Therefore, I needed guidance and knowledge from experts to help me get through this. In this case, I develop myself as a Communicator by interviewing and contacting them. My product would not be mature without receiving and listening to other perspectives and feedback from my peers, mentors, and family members. This has also included improving myself as a Communicator.
I encountered many problems throughout making the product which have helped me improve myself as a Thinker. I use both my critical and analytical thinking skills when solving the problems. I analyze and understand the problem, I research solutions, then I take responsible actions. As a Reflective learner, I reflect the problems afterwards by knowing its strengths and weaknesses, also things that I can fix and improve in the future which in the end results in developing a better self as a personal. None of these would happen without me being Balanced and Principled. I had to manage my time, be responsible, and act honest for this project. I know the consequences if I procrastinate and if I was not in my healthiest. Therefore, I committed myself to stay healthy and productive.
