Weekly Update - 9/29/23

It was great to see so many parents and students at Open House on Thursday.  Parents were able to meet their student’s teachers, see their lockers and experience the many resources and opportunities that our students have.  The Maryvale Activity Center (MAC) was a big hit with families, as was our library and Flyers’ Workspace.

The MAC is the newest addition to the list of opportunities for our students.  In the MAC we have games and activities for students, including Super Chex Bubble Hockey, foosball, pingpong, cornhole, crafts, jewelry making, a balance station and board games.  Many of the games and activities were purchased through the Community Wellness Grant that Maryvale is part of and which supports our Wellness Policy.  It is open during every mod in which there is a studyhall and a select number of students from each studyhall can go to the MAC.  To start the year, all students are eligible to go to the MAC.  However, behavioral referrals, grades and attendance will be reviewed every five weeks.  Students who receive “major” referrals, are failing multiple classes or are chronically absent will not be eligible to go to the MAC.  Instead, they will be encouraged to use their studyhalls time to improve their academic standing and behavior.

Speaking of reviewing grades and attendance every five weeks, we are finishing our 4th week of school already.  Next Friday, October 6th will mark the end of the first 5-weeks and progress reports will be available.  This weekend would be a great time to sit down with your student and review their grades and attendance.  Teachers are generally available until 2:45 and our activity buses are running every day.  If your student needs to make up work or needs extra help, have them make an appointment with their teacher.

Club and intramural offerings are starting up this week.  Again, we do have activity buses to take the students home at 2:45 if needed.  Homecoming events will be taking place the week of 10/10 -10/14.  Students should watch the Flyer News for updates on clubs, spirit days and events.

Go Bills!
