The third Standard of Great Teaching at Markham College is:
Students and Teachers will be READY to listen
Listening to others is a very important skill for our students to develop, and it is the right of every individual in the school to be heard.
We have developed the acronym READY to highlight the key components of effective and active listening. The poster displaying this that can be downloaded is below.
Respectful
To be respectful whilst somebody is talking means we:
These are common manners to allow everybody to say their opinions and thoughts in a safe environment.
Eyes on Speaker
To have your eyes on the speaker means to be tracking them and making eye contact when appropriate.
This shows the person talking that we are listening to them.
Ask Questions
We ask questions based on what the person has just said. These should be related to what has just been said and not something completely different.
The questions we ask show how much we are listening and allow us to clarify and ensure we fully understand what has been said.
Sometimes a comment is also appropriate here, instead of a question, but it should still be directly linked to what was said before.
Down
To give our full attention to the person speaking we:
Yearning to Learn
We see every opportunity that our teacher or peers talks as a further chance to learn something new. When we see each conversation and dialogue as a chance to learn something new, we are more likely to take something useful from it.
