Teaching WalkThrus are the main aspect of our CPD Options Programme, and this route has the highest capacity at any one time. Whilst not as individualised as Coaching, the WalkThrus allow teachers to work in small groups to trial teaching techniques and adapt them to their context.
Note that whilst the CPD Programme remains voluntary, you can still get involved in WalkThrus here.
Teaching WalkThrus are a set of teaching techniques that teachers can adapt to their own classrooms. Each WalkThru is made up of 5 key steps and teachers take these into their classroom to trial and adapt.
The techniques on offer are taken from the book Teaching WalkThrus, which collates tried and tested teaching techniques, and whose main purpose is to curate these techniques into an easy reference guide for teachers.
Whilst the original book contains 50 techniques, through discussion with colleagues and a survey sent to all staff, we have narrowed our initial offering to a smaller subset of these. We are calling these the Markham Core WalkThrus.
For each WalkThru there are several resources available:
Video introduction from Tom Sherrington
Presentation with more details about the WalkThru
A|D|A|P|T template to help teachers adapt the WalkThru to their classroom
Key questions to help teachers think about the use of the WalkThru
You can access all of these resources by clicking on the WalkThru that you are interested in opposite.
If you would like to look at a different WalkThru from the book, then you should consider Instructional Coaching for your CPD Option.
Each WalkThru is led by one of our teachers, who takes on the role of presenting the ideas, managing discussions and helping groups make the technique work in their classes. Find out more about the role of the WalkThru Leader here.
The WalkThru process follows this cycle, starting with an input session from the leader in the INSET Day at the start of the bimester.
Teachers then break into small groups of 3-5 members to work together to implement the technique in their unique settings.
A key part of the WalkThrus process is adapting the WalkThru to our own classrooms and contexts.
In discussion with the members of their group, each teacher will go through this process until they reach a version of the technique that works for them.
In doing this, the other teachers and the WalkThru Leader act as guard against lethal mutations of the core idea.
Reflecting on the changes we make is an important part of improving our teaching. The A|D|A|P|T process is designed to help teachers get the most out of a given WalkThru, but it is also useful to reflect on what we have done at the end of the implementing a new technique.
This short template is designed to do just that, helping teachers to reflect on their journey, and also provide a written record of what teachers have achieved in their professional development.
