Reference Guide

The below Reference Guide and supporting materials are designed as a support for our Instructional Coaches. It overviews the whole Impact Cycle, with guides and checklists for each stage, as well as any forms that may be useful. It is designed to be used within a coaching cycle, so the coach can print a copy off and 'work through it'.

Strategies

An important role of the instructional coach is to be able to share ideas for strategies once the goal has been decided, and then support the teacher in learning about the chosen strategy.

There are four recommended texts for instructional coaches to become familar with:

The link on each is to a summary of the text, but it is recommended that coaches read them in full. The school will purchase a copy of each for new coaches.

Markham Prompt Cards.pdf

There is also a set of Prompt Cards based on these texts, with a prompt on the front and a short description on the back. These could be used by the coach in a variety of ways:

  • As flashcards to test theselves on each strategy

  • Put out on the table en masse for teacher and coach to see whilst discussing strategies

  • The coach could select a few that link to the identified goal to spark a conversation

It is important to remember that any strategy will need to be adapted to suit the teacher. Within The Impact Cycle this happens in both the Learn phase and the Improve phase. The A|D|A|P|T framework from WalkThrus is excellent for this, and is included in the Reference Guide.

Reflection Journal

To help teachers get the most form the instructional coaching experience, there is a Reflection Journal they can use. In the first meeting you should give this to the teacher so they can keep it updated.

It is available in three formats:

Training

New instructional coaches will go through a series of training sessions that lasts approximately a bimester before they start coaching. At first they will coach other coaches, before moving on to the wider teaching body of the school. As instructional coaching relies on a certain amount of expertise in teaching strategies that are appropriate, there will be instructioanl coaches in each of the 3 sections of the school.

The materials for the instructional coaches training programme can all be found in the folder linked.
