The Growth Coaching framework (Campbell (2016) © Growth Coaching International) used at Markham is based upon the work of Christian van Nieuwerburgh and his colleagues at Growth Coaching International.
Your Growth Coach will act as a thinking partner to help you reason yourself to a solution or way forward towards your goal. They will listen to what you have to say, clarify any points they are not sure about, and ask questions to help guide your thinking. A Growth Coach is not there to provide you with a solution, and will not usually make any suggestions on ways to move forward. The coach will keep all conversations you have confidential, unless you disclose something which puts yourself or others at risk of harm.
The main role of the Growth Coach is to create a space where you feel safe to explore possible options, and to help you decide on which option is the best by asking you questions that prompt you to think hard about them.
All coaching is built around a coaching framework, and the Growth Coaching programme at Markham uses the GROWTH Framework developed by Growth Coaching International.
The image developed by Campbell (2016) © Growth Coaching International shown gives an overview of the framework, and the direction the coaching conversations will take.
Whereas Instructional Coaching is aimed directly at instructional practices and improving teaching in the classroom, Growth Coaching is much more versatile.
In theory, any goal can be worked upon under the GROWTH Framework, both personal and professional. Our Growth Coaches are not specialised in a particular area, but rather trained in using the GROWTH Framework to help in a wide variety of situations. Some possible areas of focus are:
Leadership
Teaching Practice (though you may find Instructional Coaching better for this)
Pastoral Issues
Work-life balance
Effective time management
Building working routines
Doing some classroom based research
