Central idea: People can go on vacation to explore different communities.
We kicked off our inquiry by taking a tour around some specific countries from our text 'This is How We Do It' to find out where they are in the world, what the climate is like and how people are affected by weather in different climates. Children have loved researching a country of their choice to then publish their findings using 'Book Creator'. Their computing skills have developed so well and it was lovely to see them so engaged in this first line of inquiry.
In science, we have begun to find out what a plant needs to grow. This has involved setting up an observational investigation as well as planting our own radish seeds so that we will be able to care for them and watch them grow!
In maths, we are experiencing the highs and lows of learning how to tell time, but also calculating durations using years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds! Children can tell you all there is to know about a leap year; exploring the calendar was fascinating to begin to reveal how to remember the number of days in a month. Please continue to talk about time in any context at home - especially conversations about 'How long until...?'
In writing skills, we have begun by writing recounts. We are all very excited about how well we can now edit our work and consistently use time conjunctions, descriptive language and more accurate past tense. You will see the journey children take in their writing from the pictures shown - we are so immensely proud of the independence and sense of adventure all children show in their writing.
Last term, we had a super visit from two of our local Parish Councillors and we sent them our letters which we had written regarding new developments in Marden. I thought you would like to see the reply which we received and the very kind words that reflect your children's learning.
