Juniper      Learning Update

Central idea: People communicate to share knowledge and experiences.

Thank you to all of you who could make it to the art workshop to celebrate the children's interest in art as a way of communicating. Since this, we have started to consider that art, and other methods of communication, look different around the world. Our discussion led to Japan, we spoke about how in Japan people greet one another with a bow. We noticed that this was different to what we do here in England, often people would greet one another with a wave or a handshake.

The children were able to talk about the fact that other countries speak different languages. We learnt that Kon'nichiwa is hello in Japanese. We began to look at some Makaton (a method of communicating through signs and symbols) to help us to communicate better with those who may not understand us, like people who speak other languages. We linked this to our emotions to tell others how we are feeling. The children have become fascinated with Japanese dance and music, for PE we have started to practise the choreography to some Japanese dancing while using our Makaton to share how the music and dance makes us feel.

This is Makaton for happy

This is Makaton for sad.

This is Makaton for angry

This is Makaton for tired

This is Makaton for excited
