6Elm Learning Update

Central idea: Architecture as a form of expression reflects culture and history.

This week, we were incredibly fortunate to have a teacher join us from Mascalls school, to lead us in a dissection of a pig's heart, as a part of our science learning. It is fair to say that the whole of year 6 were fully engaged and utilised the opportunity to gain as much knowledge about the heart as possible. In fact, they were so good that the teacher emailed us back to say how much of a credit our students were to themselves and to the school!

As a part of our inquiry learning, we have constructed a timeline of British architectural periods through the years. The children conducted their own research into how architectural styles developed and the key design features that are unique to each period. To bring their research to life, we finished the week by having a walk around the village with Mr Williams to find out some very interesting facts about some of the local houses and buildings that we drive or walk past every day. The children enjoyed this very much and it is wonderful to see them becoming keen historians.

We have been using the four operations in calculations involving fractions for our maths learning. I am challenging the students to always use their mathematical vocabulary, such as, 'finding the lowest common multiple to find the common denominator,' when reasoning. For our writing this week, we have been recapping the skills of using inverted commas and we have been inspired by our core text to produce a news report on a mysterious explosion!
