Earth Day 2024
To mark Earth day 2024, 5 Attenborough were invited to UCL East where they had the opportunity to watch a contemporary dance piece exploring our complex relationship with plastic - highlighting the positives that plastic can bring as well as the devastating consequences plastic has on the environment. The children then participated in a dance workshop where they were encouraged to be creative and express their thoughts and feelings about plastic through movement. This was great fun and the children really enjoyed using gestures and dance to represent their personal views on environmental issues. To conclude, the children made a pledge to the Earth to reduce plastic consumption - something in which I am sure you know 5 Attenborough feel very strongly about!
Chapter 7 - Decimals
We have now finished our chapter on fractions and have moved on to decimals. We have been using concrete resources to represent decimals and have revisited place value. We are learning how to order decimals from smallest to greatest.
London Stadium Tour
5 Attenborough had an incredible visit to the London Stadium this week - home to West Ham United. The children went on a guided tour learning about when and why the stadium was built and found out some interesting facts about the Olympic games. Following this, we were given behind the scene access to the West Ham United players dressing room, walked through the iconic tunnel and out onto the football pitch and even got to sit in the players chairs! As you can see we had an absolute blast!
ROCKIN' MATHS DAY!
On Friday, we had an absolutely rockin' time for Maths Day. The children loved dressing up as rockstars and solving Maths riddles, challenges and even had a Maths scavenger hunt in the playground. It was really eye opening for the children to see how much Maths we actually use everyday without even realising.
Childhood Day 2024
Childhood Day brings everyone in the UK together to have fun and help keep children safe. This year it took place on Friday 7th June. We marked this event by participating in various games. The whole school enjoyed a fun-packed afternoon of multi-sport activities such as basketball, dodgeball, cricket and more. We finished the day with a community fun dance and were treated to ice pops at the end to cool us down! It was great having so much fun together in a place where we all feel safe!
Empire Windrush
As part of year 5's History unit 'What does it mean to be British?' and in the run up to Windrush Day, we have been learning about the Windrush Generation and what life was like in 1948, when the very first ship sailed from the Caribbean to Britain. We have looked at the massive contributions and sacrifices those on board Empire Windrush made to rebuild Britain after the second world war and how this has gone on to shape Britain today. We also explored the challenges, discrimination and racism that Caribbean people faced on arrival. Year 5 loved watching videos from the annual Notting Hill Carnival and are looking forward to making their own head dresses in preparation for our very own Stratford Manor carnival at the end of the year.
Election Week at Stratford Manor
This week at Stratford Manor, we held our very own elections. Each year group had to choose a name for their party that linked with their key beliefs and manifesto. In 5 Attenborough, the children decided to campaign for something in which they feel very strongly about - the environment! As a class, we campaigned and educated others around the school on the current environmental crisis that the world is facing. Everyone took part and listened respectfully to the other parties and had the chance to cast their very own vote for who they believe could make a difference here at Stratford Manor. It was a great experience and helped the children understand the general elections that were held on Thursday.
