Vapor Intrusion happens when chemical vapors from contaminated soil and groundwater migrate into a structure. This has been an issue in Grand Rapids, specifically in the Madison Square area. This area is predominately occupied by people of color. The long term affects of these vapors are drastic, causing cancer and other serious ailments.

Deposits from leaded gasoline, exterior lead-based paint, and industrial sources have contributed to increased levels of lead in the soil, especially in urban areas and homes built before 1978. Lead poisoning is affecting adults and children in these areas and must be prevented.

Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life. With the ongoing pandemic, food is even more scarce for families suffering from unemployment, especially in low income areas.

The Greater Grand Rapids Chapter of the NAACP has been fighting for justice in all aspects of the community, but environmental issues account for much of their focus. Unfortunately, many areas in Grand Rapids that are predominately populated by minorities - who face additional struggles of injustice - also suffer from environmental discrimination. Communities like Madison Square need immediate attention, but spreading awareness, educating communities, and taking action are the NAACP, and more specifically, the Greater Grand Rapids Chapter's top priorities. The more publicity and knowledge the community has, the more effectively and efficiently these discriminatory environmental issues can be addressed.
