504 & Special Education Services
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination and assures that disabled students have educational opportunities and benefits equal to those provided to non-disabled students. Section 504 covers qualified students with disabilities who attend schools receiving Federal financial assistance. To be protected under Section 504, a student must be determined to: (1) have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; (2) have a record of such an impairment, or (3) be regarded as having such an impairment. Section 504 requires that school districts provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to qualified students in their jurisdictions who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
Special Education Services
The Lake Travis Independent School District provides a continuum of specially designed instructional supports and services for students with disabilities eligible for Special Education services. A full range of academic supports for grades 9-12 are available at Lake Travis High School and can be accessed through either the general program of instruction or through special education instruction and related services, as determined by the admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) committee. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) identifies the critical skills needed for academic and post-graduation success. Should you have any questions concerning special education services, please call the counselor or campus Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP). The Continuum of Special Education Services and Supports include regular, basic, applied and vocational education classes. Necessary accommodations in the curriculum, teaching methods, testing methods, and other special solutions or arrangements meet the individual learning needs as determined by an ARD Committee and each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Further information about access to these classes can be obtained from the special education department. As collaborative supports within general education classes are considered to be a service determined by the ARD Committee, they are not listed as courses in this guide.
