Entry into Theatre art requires students to participate in productions, and requires some after school rehearsal if a student is selected and accepts a position in a production. Materials and selections may be of mature nature


THEATRE I, THEATRE ARTS I

Grades: 9-11 Credit: 1  

This Theatre course is designed for the beginning actor. The course will introduce the new Theatre student to the exciting world of Theatre. Topics of study will include expressive use of body and voice through drama games and warm-ups, basic acting techniques, script analysis, intro to Theatre history, stage terminology, the production process, technical elements and crew work, as well as beginning performance opportunities. Theatre I students will be required to attend school play performances. 


THEATRE II, THEATRE ARTS II-IV

Grades: 10-12 Credit: 1  

Prerequisite: Theatre Arts I and Instructor Approval by Audition

Theatre 2-4 is an advanced level course in which the actor will continue to develop acting techniques, interpret theatrical texts, utilize the voice and body expressively, explore technical Theatre, and practice evaluation and reflection. Students will be given the opportunity to be involved in performance pieces in the fall and spring, but will be required to attend very few after school rehearsals. In addition, the course will include accents/dialects, Shakespeare, Theatre History, directing and playwriting. All elements of production work will be incorporated including make-up, props, costumes, sound, lighting, publicity and set design. The course is designed for the acting student interested in serious and challenging production work. Theatre 2 – 4 students will be required to attend school play performances or be involved in them.


THEATRE PRODUCTION I-IV

Grades: 9-12 Credit: 1  

Prerequisite: Instructor Approval by Audition and a theatre class in middle school or high school or equivalent program

Theatre Production is a course for the dedicated theatre student. This course is similar to regular Theatre Arts courses, but is designed to cover the material with increased depth and requires participation afterschool in the preparation and presentation of multiple campus productions. Focusing on the practical application of acting and theatre concepts and skills, students will engage in the production process by performing such roles as actor, director, designer, and other creative and technical positions involved in the execution of a full theatrical production. This course is designed for the focused Theatre student interested in full involvement in the program. Students in this course will be required to audition for all main stage school plays.


THEATRE DIRECTING IV

Grades: 12 Credit: 1 Course #1797 

Prerequisite: Theatre Production III

The student will design, direct and learn theatre production concepts and skills. They will also be expected to experiment with the technical elements of theatre safely and effectively in improvisation or scripted scenes or plays; analyze and evaluate dramatic texts and direct brief scenes; demonstrate understanding of a director's responsibility to the author's intent, script, actors, designers, technicians, and audience; analyze production plans that include research, rehearsal plans, technical designs, and blocking; demonstrate leadership by casting and directing a long scene or a short play, producing a unified theatrical production; and apply expertise in one or more areas of theatre production, demonstrating responsibility, artistic discipline, and creative problem solving.


MUSICAL THEATRE II-IV

Grades: 10-12 Credit: 1  

Prerequisite: Audition & Instructor approval only and be enrolled in a theatre or choral class

Musical Theatre will expose students to a wide range of on-stage performance disciplines, including acting performance, vocal performance, and dance performance. The course will also provide an atmosphere in which students benefit from a teaching and learning experience in these performance disciplines of musical theatre. Students will receive comprehensive and rigorous instruction so that they may make informed choices about the craft, college, and the profession. The course will enhance and cultivate the creative gifts of each student while encouraging a sense of self-confidence. The course will enable students to study and perform the varied styles of musical theatre with special attention to the principles of stage movement, stage vocal technique, stage choreography, acting, characterization, and other aspects of a musical production.  Students must be enrolled in a Theater or Choral class along with this course (this is not a stand alone course).
