Step 1: Explain the Project Hidden Picture
Students will choose 2 Louisiana themed Photos and put it in the Louisiana Photo Slideshow
Students will learn the pen and ink drawing techniques known as hatching, cross hatching, stippling and scumbling to create a drawing in which two images can be seen by the viewer. The subject must be of a Louisiana theme.
Step 2: Begin learning about how Light and Shadow play on a form and shade a sphere using the blending technique.
Activity: Shading a Sphere in Graphite using the blending technique.
Video: Shading a Sphere
Step 3: Apply what we learned yesterday about Shadows and Highlights and draw them on more forms. Value: basic Forms
Activity: Shading a Cube, Pyramid, Cylinder and Cone and
create a rubric for the project.
Step 4: Learn new ways to shade the form: Short dashes,Hatching, Cross Hatching, Stippling, wavy lines and Scumbling. Watch this video on how to shade many different forms. Shading with Line Video
Drawing Tips:
a. Make sure you are using a light enough pencil. Any of of H pencils are create for contour line drawings because they can be easily erased.
b. Draw lightly at first and then once you are confident in your rendering then go in an darken up your lines.
c. When shading use an unsharpened pencil and if its too sharp dull down the tip by rubbing it on a piece of paper other than your drawing or on sandpaper. Start with a 2b and gradually build up to a 4B then 6B.
d. Use circular motions to get less lines in your shading.
e. Start with your midtone value across the form; avoiding areas that are highlights.
f. Pay attention to the amount of pressure you are using as you shade. Its better to gradually build to darker values than to press hard from the beginning to get a dark value.
g. Stand back from your work often to get a better idea of the whole form.
Step 5: Learn to draw using a grid.
Watch this video I made: How to Grid a Photograph and then enlarge
Students will measure out a 1" by 1" grid on the illustration board given. They will then draw a contour line drawing of the portrait of the little boy from the photograph provided.
Step 6: Practice shading your grid drawing using one or more of the shading with lines techniques we learned previously.
The student may choose from hatching, cross hatching, stippling or scumbling to complete the drawing.
Example of a photo and pen drawing using multiple pen techniques (stippling and scumbling)
Step 7:
Choose at least one photo from
https://www.louisianatravel.com/ as your main photo. You will need two photos to merge into one drawing so if you would like to choose both photos from this website you may, but it is not required. Post your photos in google classroom under Winter Arts Photos so that I can print them.
Step 8: Grid out each of your photos that I printed. Watch this video to learn how to create a grid on your photos.
**Depending on the size of the printout we may enlarge one grid so that your drawing is larger.
Our project will be on 9 x12 Paper.
Step 9: Draw at least one thumbnail drawing of how you plan to merge your two photo drawings into one. Keep in mind you do not need to keep all of the detail of each photo. You may eliminate things you do not need that would complicate the drawing. You must include a background from at least one of the photos.
What is a thumbnail?
Step 10: Start Drawing your 1st enlarged background photo first on your 9 x 12 paper. You only need to draw the contour drawing. Do no do any pencil shading.
Step 11: Next, draw your second photo in its final place in your composition again using contour line and no shading.
Step 12: Now start shading your composition using any combination of the pen and ink techniques we practiced previously.
Pay special attention to:
Make a conscious decision on which pen technique fits the texture of whatever it is you are drawing. For example: Hatching and cross hatching might be great for straight hair, scumbling might be better for curly hair, etc.
Creating a wide range of values
Follow the contour of your form. An apple is round so it should not have any straight lines...only curved for example.
