Students will look at Drawings of Hands for inspiration.
Students will practice drawing their hands. Teacher will demo drawing hands by breaking down the hand into simple shapes. Gradually building to more complex positions.
Students will practice adding value in graphite to their hands from the previous day. Focusing on a depth of contrast using highlights, midtones and shadows.
Students will draw their hands at least 4 different times in 4 different expressive positions.
Think about:
-hand position
- how each hand relates to each other
-at least one hand must be holding a simple object that represents or symbolizes you (a paintbrush, a shoe, a bracelet, a pendant, a ribbon).
Students will begin sketches and consider their composition:
• use intuitive gesture sketches to figure out placement, proportion, and size relationships.
• include line quality (variation in line weights)!
• use hands of differing sizes. This creates interesting contrast and depth in your composition.
• Hands should not float in space. They should extend off the edges of the paper, and some should also overlap to create depth.
• Fill space of paper with maximum positive space, little negative space.
Outline your pencil lines using a black fine tipped marker. Copy the line quality exactly! Erase any visible pencil lines.
Students will complete their drawings using an interesting and original black and white pattern in the background to create visual rhythm and movement in the negative space. They may use one complex but unified pattern, or they may use many different patterns that complement eachother.
-Each student will complete 3 Zentangles
designs and choose their favorite for their background
Students may now implement their favorite design into the background negative space of their drawing to complete their designs.
