Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Reading Fahrenheit 451 plunged the Year 9s into a strange and unsettling world in which books are illegal. Protagonist Guy Montag's job as a fireman is not to put out fires, but to start them, burning books and the homes of anyone who owns them. Over time, though, he becomes curious about books. He begins to question why they must be burned. This novels tells the story of his journey of self-discovery and rebellion against an oppressive society.
What did the Year 9s get up to?
The students designed book covers and playlists to accompany the book, showing off their artistic talents! They also responded to the book's themes by thinking about things that make a difference in the world: the books that are important to them, the issues they care about, the legacy they want to leave behind. It was wonderful to read their thoughtful poetry and ideas.
The Power of Books
What would life be like without books? The students chose books that were important to them and explained why they wouldn't want to lose them. Interestingly, there were a few common themes that many of the boys brought up:
Books make memories. Mohammed A. wrote: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid is important to me because I always used to read it when I was a kid."
Books open our eyes to other experiences. Ubaid H. says: "I really liked this book because it taught me why you should respect everyone, no matter their appearance."
Books help us learn about ourselves, too. Shahriar K. says: "Alex is living the dream of every teenager but all he really wants is to have a normal life. I love this book because it includes a teenager who struggles against incomprehensible odds."
Background Music
What is the soundtrack to Guy Montag's story? Students created playlists to reflect the emotions and ideas in the novel, with some thought-provoking results.
