Used for Sights POIs that are unexpectedly free (ie a traveller would assume they need to pay an entry fee).
Used to highlight the best options for a destination – must-visit POIs – to aid travellers in decision-making.
This attribute is used conscientiously. There is no set minimum or maximum per POI type – a region may have several Top-Choice Eating POIs or none. Too many POIs with the Top Choice attribute in a region – particularly within the same POI type – diminish the attribute’s value, so it is used sparingly. It is rare for any one place to have more than three or four Top Choice POIs for one POI type.
When writers add new Top Choice POIs it is their responsibility to consider removing Top Choice status from other POIs of the same type to avoid overuse of the Top Choice status.
Note: Not used for Festivals & Events, Info or Transport POIs.
Unlike POI Scores, Top Choice is based very much on a local comparison. A score 3 POI may still be a Top Choice for given place.
POIs that are given narrative coverage as a Top Sight always receive the Top Choice attribute.
A further categorisation of Activities POIs, used to indicate where an Activities POI is a course (ie a lesson on a particular topic, eg language, cooking).
Courses have their own set of standard subtypes.
The Course attribute is not used for any POI type other than Activities. It cannot be used in conjunction with the Tour attribute.
A further categorisation of Activities POIs, used to indicate where an Activities POI is an organised tour (eg with a guide or self-guided with a walking map or audio guide acquired in the destination).
Tours have their own set of standard subtypes, some of which are shared with the standard Activities subtypes, some of which are unique.
An Activities POI with the subtype ‘Kayaking’ would be considered a Tour where the service offered includes a guide and focuses on the experience as a way of seeing an area rather than simply the going kayaking (eg a unique way to experience London is to take a guided kayaking tour of the Thames). If the service is simply renting kayaks, the Activities POI is not a tour.
The Tour attribute is not used for any POI type other than Activities. It cannot be used in conjunction with the Course attribute.
