Use asylum seeker to refer to a person who is seeking refugee status or humanitarian protection. Do not confuse this term with refugee, which is a person who has been granted asylum or humanitarian protection or leave to stay in a particular country.
There is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker – if an asylum seeker is not given refugee status and remains in a country, he or she becomes an undocumented immigrant. Do not refer to individuals as illegal immigrants.
