Sustained Investigation #12

Tonwa Sculpture.

With this sculpture, I wanted to portray the clothing and style of the Aztec culture. This character in my story is from a place inspired by what that culture represents and how I can learn about the history and different styles but also incorporate them into my art. The process of making this sculpture was to start with a clay base layer and eventually carve and add onto layers. When the body is done I always go over it with paint, sometimes even marker if I want to add a little silver or gold to the piece. His base is made of wood with tiny beads and necklace decorations as well as fake leaves and a fake flower. I wanted to put him in a warrior's pose, so he's leaning to the side as if ready to strike. As with the Lucid sculpture, I made a drawing to express the idea I wanted to do and then use the extra time to contribute to the sculpture. Made with Sculpey clay, acrylic paint, black and white ink pen and various necklace beads and decorations.
