Across all three year groups there has been an equal practical/theory split. For the first half of the lesson, pupils will perform a challenging workout which will have a different sport or muscle group focus. The second half of the lesson will be dedicated to learning new knowledge and consolidating prior knowledge.
Our Year 7s have been focusing on the different types of training: more specifically, aerobic and anaerobic fitness, and how this is presented in different sports. Pupils have then been introduced to different types of training (for example, circuit training, interval training, and continuous training), before applying their knowledge into developing their own circuits from the knowledge they have gained.
Year 8 have continued with their knowledge of the muscular system. After identifying the location of each muscle, using their previous knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and the joints, they are now able to explain how antagonistic muscle pairs work to pull on the bone, allowing movement at the joint.
Year 9 have been introduced to the main components of the cardiovascular system: specifically, the structure of the heart and the pathway of blood through the heart. Within this, they have identified the key functions of the cardiovascular system and the important role it plays in circulating vital nutrients, and oxygen, around our body.

All pupils are offered the opportunity to take their learning that step further and undertake a Take It Further task. This week, the spotlight shines on our Year 9s (Quinn (9C), Isobel (9A), Beatrix (9A), and Serra (9E) who applied their knowledge on the pathway of blood through the heart to create an image/diagram to demonstrate this (see images one, two, three and four).
Submissions for this week’s PE Bonus Challenges have been incredible, and we share with you two examples (from Dylan (8C) and Rory (9A); see images four and five) of their amazing efforts to create a skeleton out of household objects! Entries for this challenge are still open and all that partake will be rewarded with merits for their Ambition).
