As we come to the end of week 4 of lockdown, our levels of engagement have gone up, with nearly 90% of the college routinely engaging in all of their lessons.
Highlights of the past fortnight include Mr Oelschlagel’s moving assembly on the Holocaust Memorial day, including the live testimony of Eve Kugler, a Holocaust survivor. We hope that, on the evening of the 27th January, as many of our students as possible remembered to place a candle in their window[s], as an act of remembrance.
It would be an appropriate time to remember also, perhaps, the famous words of Viktor Frankl, another Holocaust survivor who, in chronicling his experiences as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps, wrote of how “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.”
Although the inconveniences of lockdown cannot, of course, compare to the unparalleled horrors of the holocaust, Frankl’s hopeful reminder of the heroism that lies in choosing to make the best of one’s circumstances, should make us proud that so many of our students have demonstrated such integrity and resilience by quietly getting on with their studies each day.
Whether from their bedroom, a kitchen table or a makeshift study, the vast majority of students in Sancho, young though they are, have met this moment with a maturity beyond their years. We as a college team could not be prouder.
Indeed, many have gone beyond this of late and begun supporting their families also. Our “I Help Out: Caught in the Act” competition has been a great success, with images of students (and staff!) hanging up washing , hoovering and unloading the dishes flooding in. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those who took part in this competition; we hope that these acts of kindness took students away from their screens, and lightened the load of our parents and carers, if only for a time!
We wanted to close this edition of the newsletter by paying special tribute to all those individuals who have sustained consistently high engagement since the very start of term. It cannot have been easy at times, but the students named below have yet to miss a single lesson, an achievement for which they have been awarded a certificate. Well done! We look forward to adding many more names to this list of consistently engaged individuals as the module goes on.

Phoebe, 7E
This week, Phoebe has kindly shared her art work, which is one of her favourite activities during this lockdown
As referenced above, last week we launched a competition called "I help out: caught in the act!", where students and staff share pictures of them caught in the act of helping out at home.
Here are some of the photos we were sent, below.
Mr Morrison caught doing the hoovering
Ms Garcia caught filling the dishwasher
Rihanna caught doing some cooking
Ms Ford caught doing some hoovering
Included below are the names of the fortnight Sancho Stars (each of whom has been awarded 3 merits)

Olivia Reascos (7B) - For providing clear and detailed observations of issues with accessing a LAB Learner lesson, and attempting to resolve the issue for both herself and her peers.
Demarco Walters (7E) - For owing respect and integrity by helping a new student settle into his digital learning and contacting teachers to help him.

Millie Ford and Maddie Roe (9E) - For always working hard, and keeping each other motivated through home learning.
Thank you, again, for all that you’re doing to support your child’s learning during this difficult time. Please do continue to liaise with your child’s tutor and the wider college team regarding your child’s experience of remote learning, and any further pastoral support that we can provide.
Best wishes,
