This term, our transdisciplinary theme was 'How We Express Ourselves,' and we dove into the exciting central idea that 'Performances can engage an audience.'
To kick off our exploration, the children became young scientists, conducting thrilling experiments to uncover the secrets of how light travels. Using cards, a bullseye, torches, and mirrors, they discovered that light travels in straight lines. They also engaged in a fascinating 'I think, I see, I wonder' activity to explore the magical formation of colours through light.
They explored how light can reveal different colours using torches, fairy liquid, and a straw. One of the most captivating experiments involved blowing bubbles and observing the rainbows on their surfaces. The children were mesmerised by the beautiful colours and learned about how light refracts and reflects to create this stunning effect. Using their newfound knowledge, they created impressive knowledge organisers with key vocabulary, showcasing their understanding of light and colour and shadows.
The excitement continued as the children delved into 'The features of production.' They discovered the key ingredients of creating a fantastic performance, including the magic of lighting, the creativity of props, the art of choreography, and the power of facial expressions and tone of voice to bring their characters to life.
Adding to the excitement, the children began learning songs, choreography, and scripts from our upcoming production, Matilda the Musical. They enthusiastically stepped into character, imagining how these elements would shine in the final performance.
Our second line of inquiry this term was to investigate ‘How components are made’. As part of the inquiry, we decided to create and sew our own badges for the Crunchem Hall School uniform - this was for our version of Matilda. The first thing that the children did was experiment with different types of stitches. Following on from this, they practised these and created their own design for the school badge. The children were then able to sew their badge using their new stitching knowledge. We had some absolutely phenomenal badges made and the children have really impressed us with their sewing skills! As well as this, they have continued making a wide range of props, which will all feature as part of their production. The children continued to rehearse the production scenes and songs in full rehearsals to really start bringing the production together.
For our final line of inquiry, the children have investigated ‘What makes shows successful’. The children have continued to rehearse their production using different elements to make it successful. Additionally, the children have created a Google Form to ask their audience after the production is completed what they have done well and what they could do to improve shows further in the future. The children then showed their Computing skills by creating a script from our production using the ‘hanging indent’ tool. They were reflective as they improved one of the scenes in order to make the scene successful and engage an audience.
Finally, the children performed their production at the Leigh Academy in front of other members of staff from DPA and for their parents and carers. The children were incredible risk-takers and really brought the production to life! We are so incredibly proud of the children and all they have achieved throughout their Dartford Primary Academy journey. We have thoroughly enjoyed teaching them over the last year. We wish them all of the greatest success as they move onto their next adventure!
The Year 6 Exhibition
As part of the PYP, the children had the opportunity to showcase this term's work at the Year 6 Exhibition! Our students were lucky enough to meet with some children from Eastcote Primary Academy, to discuss the interesting things that they had learnt over the course of the term. It was also an opportunity to show off some of the exciting things our children have been doing - including a sneak peek of the production. This was a fun-filled afternoon, full of facts, interesting discussion, videos and live science demonstrations! A huge well done to all of the children for showing their amazing communication and social skills throughout the entire Exhibition!
