This term our Transdisciplinary Theme was ‘How We Express Ourselves’ and in Year 3 we began our inquiry about how beliefs and cultures can be expressed in different ways. We focussed on how our own beliefs compare with the ancient Egyptians and how people can express them. We started by recreating the day that Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamum’s tomb. We became archaeologists and went exploring inside King Tut’s tomb and examining treasures that were buried within it. We then used this as inspiration for writing newspaper articles about the event.
All of these artefacts taught us lots about the people of Ancient Egypt and the different things that they believed in. One of the most exciting beliefs was what happened to people after they died. Mummification and burying people with their belongings was all part of preparing the dead for the next life. We showed this idea through dance in our PE lessons this term, using the Create and Dance programme from the Royal Opera House.
We also learnt lots about the different Gods that the Ancient Egyptian people believed in and how this compares to modern religions. We learned that, although there are alot of differences between the Gods that people believe in, there are also a lot of similarities. We also found that people can express their beliefs in all sorts of creative ways. For example, the cartouches that the children recreated using clay. We also tried some calligraphy, inspired by how muslims express their beliefs. We also recreated a recipe found on the walls of a tomb for an ancient Egyptian snack.
