We have had an incredible start to our Term 6 topic – Ancient Romans! The children engaged in a range of fun activities, including re-enacting a Roman-style invasion of a Celtic tribe. To take part in the battle, they crafted swords and shields, then had an exciting mock battle on the playground. This sparked numerous questions about the topic, which we have explored throughout the term, linked to our transdisciplinary theme: ‘How We Express Ourselves’ and our central idea: ‘Creativity can lead to new discoveries,’ exploring the impact and influence the ancient Romans had on Britain.
As the term progressed, the children learned about different aspects of the Roman Empire, the army, and their lifestyle through our lines of inquiry: How arts and creativity shaped a culture. Through this line of inquiry, they investigated how the ancient Romans lived, what they wore, and what they ate. The children were fascinated by the differences in lifestyle compared to today. They applied their knowledge by writing excellent non-chronological reports and a narrative story about Romulus and Remus, incorporating key writing features and grammatical skills.
They thoroughly enjoyed our class reader, Romans on the Rampage, which told the story of a raven narrating his ancient Roman experience. This humorous book provided the children with a glimpse into the life of a wealthy Roman boy.
During Science and Art Week, the children had a fantastic time exploring sound. They learned how sound travels to the ear and were amazed to discover that it actually travels through the air. They participated in a scientific session on sound, demonstrating how it travels. Additionally, they researched our artist of the term, Gaudi, and produced some incredible pieces in his style.
For our Design and Technology inquiry, the children made Roman tunics and necklaces. They created these for the main characters of our Roman playscript, which they performed on our Roman-themed day.
The children had an amazing time swimming and enjoyed their sports day, among many other incredible activities. We ended the term with our Big Camp Out – what a fun and exciting way to conclude the school year! We have all had a productive term, and they deserve a long rest in preparation for Year 5. Enjoy your holidays!
