This term we have created some amazing memories in Year 1. Our transdisciplinary theme was “How we express ourselves” with the central idea - “All living creatures have an identity”. We began our inquiry by revisiting the 7 continents and linking with our significant individual of the term - Amelia Earhart. In provocation the children explored various ways you could travel and did further research on the first aeroplane flight by the Wright Brothers. We then explored equipment that would be needed by an explorer on their journey.
We then linked our Science inquiry , where we identified and named domestic and wild animals and their habitats. We went further by classifying these animals according to their diets. We then visited Wingham Wildlife Park where we identified some of these animals and read about their habitats and diets.
Towards the end of the term in Art, we researched the sculptor Nick Mackman and explored images of her work. We then experimented using different techniques such as rolling , pinching and smoothing. We then designed and planned how to create our own animal using clay .
Finally , we celebrated activities week , where we took a journey to North America to visit the country of Mexico. The children completed various activities and thoroughly enjoyed learning the Mexican dance. We learned about the different clothing types we would take on a holiday to Mexico. What an amazing term it has been for Year 1!
We wish you all a great summer break!
