Los Alamos Early College & Career Academy (LAECCA) supports students in early access to post secondary training, allowing them to graduate from high school with a diploma and possibly a UNM-LA certificate. All LAHS students are eligible for dual credit courses beginning the summer after 9th grade. LAECCA students begin taking dual-credit courses on their selected pathway the semester following acceptance to the program. They are expected to enroll in at least one dual credit class on their pathway every fall and spring semester.
The goal of LAECCA is to create a seamless experience for students between high school and their post-secondary goals by providing a focus on a future career. It is perfect for students who have the potential and desire to do college coursework every semester, earning substantial credits toward a technical certificate before high school graduation. LAECCA currently emphasizes five areas of post-secondary study:
• Business-Accounting
• Business-Management
• Business-Marketing
• Early Childhood Education
• Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos is a valued partner in the development and implementation of this initiative. Students interested in LAECCA will be identified in the beginning course of their particular pathway of interest:
• If you are interested in one of the three Business certificates, you should select Business Software I (formally "Desktop Publishing") and Business Software II (formally "Information Management").
• If you are interested in the Emergency Medical Technician certificate, you should select Introduction to Medical Terminology.
• If you are interested in the Early Childhood Education certificate, you should select Child Development.
Taking these courses in the 9th grade will put you on-track to earning a college certificate. For additional information regarding LAECCA, please contact your LAHS counselor or the LAECCA counselor, Madeline Styron.
