Career & Technical Education
Department Chair: Dr. Sharon Hurley-Johns, s.hurley@laschools.net
Classes of 2026, 2027, 2028: Students must also complete .5 credit in a Practical Art. All courses listed in the College and Careers Technology Department, the Fine Arts Department and the Special Programs Department fulfill the practical arts requirement. Yearbook, an English elective, also fulfills the practical arts requirement.
**Beginning with students entering the ninth grade (Class of 2029) in the 2025-2026 school year, students will no longer be required to complete a separate .5 credit in practical arts, technology, and fine arts. Instead, students will be required to complete a two-credit pathway concentration of the student's choice in a language other than English, including American sign language; fine arts; health; military career preparation; a career technical education program; or community or service learning, a capstone course or work-based learning; provided that financial literacy, computer science, student service learning, career technical education courses and a sequence of languages other than English shall be offered as electives. While this is similar to the Career Cluster requirement, students must successfully complete 2 credits, which may be more than 2 courses.
