◆  Band is a year-long course for students continuing on a wind or percussion instrument. All band students will perform with the marching band first quarter in the fall and in concert ensembles following the conclusion of marching season. Students will have the opportunity to perform many exciting styles of music across multiple settings, travel both within the state and to out-of-state destinations, audition for honor groups and participate in other outside groups. Co-curricular requirements: During marching season (first quarter), students must attend pre-season band camp, once-a-week evening rehearsals (Mondays, 6:30-8:30), home football games and out-of-town competitions. *Four consecutive years will fulfill the PE graduation requirement. ◆  Jazz Band explores various musical idioms and styles such as swing, funk, rock, blues, latin and pop. All winds, brass and percussion as well as students who play bass and guitar are welcome in this group (reading of musical notation is required). There will be evening performances as well as possible trips to out-of-town festivals.  (1125) All interested students are encouraged to sign up for both semesters.

◆  A welcoming, all-levels choir that builds confidence and skill through fun, inclusive performances in a variety of musical styles. This choir is open to all Toppers who love to sing—no experience required. Students build confidence, develop healthy vocal technique, and have fun performing music from a wide range of styles, including pop, rock, and more. Class time is where nearly all learning takes place, keeping outside commitment to a minimum. The group performs in one concert per semester and focuses on creating a positive, inclusive space where every singer belongs. (1130)

◆  An auditioned treble choir performing advanced music with energy, precision, and pride throughout the year. This choir is an auditioned treble ensemble for singers ready to take their skills to the next level. Students perform advanced music at a faster pace and represent LAHS at concerts and competitions throughout the year, including the State Choir Contest. Members grow as musicians and leaders while being part of a close, high-achieving team. Auditions will be held in Early January. (1131)

◆  Schola Cantorum is an AUDITIONED choir for men and women wishing to push their music skills to the limits and beyond. This State Championship choir performs often throughout the year and requires a larger time commitment then any other choir on campus.  Auditions are the last week of January each year. (1131)

◆  This introductory course provides students with the foundational skills needed for music making and audio production. All levels of experience are welcome—from complete beginners to students who play an instrument or have digital music knowledge. Students gain hands-on experience with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and explore careers in digital music and audio. Class projects include creating a personal ringtone, editing dialogue, producing radio commercials, designing sound effects, and adding music and audio to video clips. By the end of the course, students complete a personal project that showcases their creativity and technical growth. (1194)

◆  AP Music Theory is for students that are interested in learning more about the inner workings of Western Tonal Music. The course is a rigorous examination of music, in both written and aural forms as expressed in the Common Practice Era. It also includes ear training, analysis of historical music practices, world music, and popular music. (1142) Students are required to pay for and take the AP Exam in the spring in order to earn a weighted grade.

◆ Love to play your string (violin, viola, cello, double bass) instrument? Like Classical music but other kinds of music too? Join the Concert Orchestra and have it all! We play movie music, popular tunes, jam on electric instruments and on occasion collaborate with other orchestras and the band. We have "ear feasts" in which we listen to all kinds of music. Like to compose? We dabble in that part of our art as well. No need to audition for this class - just sign up! But, ah, like all classes, there is some homework. While I very often give some practice time during class, on the days I don't or the days you don't have class, you have to practice. This is a team sport for sure and so all team members need to do their part. Students are expected to “practice their age” on a daily basis (a 15 year old student should practice, minimally, 15 minutes each day). Students are expected to perform in 3 concerts throughout the year and participate with MPA (music performance assessment) as required by the State of New Mexico. Additional opportunities exist to audition for Honor Orchestra and All-State. Appropriate performance attire (all black) is required. This is a year-long class and participation for the entire year is expected. (1120)

Prerequisites: Successful audition (two 3 octave scales and a challenging solo from the standard repertory) and instructor approval.  

◆  Symphonic Strings is a rigorous orchestra class requiring an audition and director approval before signing up for the class. Daily focused practice is expected as well as participation in 3 concerts (possibly more) and the annual MPA event. Audition efforts for All-State and/or Honor Orchestra is very strongly encouraged. All black attire (including socks and shoes) is required for all performing events. Students help choose concert repertoire. (1124)
