◆ This is an introductory studio arts and crafts course that offers an introduction to basic design elements and principles, and their applications on the two-dimensional surface and three-dimensional form. Students will develop a range of basic art skills, depending on majority interest, and may use a variety of medium including but not limited to: plaster, wire, paper, recycled materials and fabric. Students will find creative solutions for the different types of projects which might include, but not be limited to, printmaking, ceramics, painting and sculpture. They will gain an understanding of the vocabulary and materials needed for concept development, through completed art pieces. Prerequisites: There are many ways to satisfy the prerequisites for AP Studio Arts. Completing Fine Arts 1, Fine Arts 2, Fine Arts 3, and Fine Arts 4 or Taking a combination of at least four visual art courses and gaining permission from the instructor. Finally, if you are a rising senior and you create artwork on your own, but were unable to complete the pre requisites you may qualify with permission from the instructor.
◆ AP Studio Arts is a college level course, and is designed for students who are interested in the practical experience of visual art beyond high school. AP Studio Arts is not based on a written exam; but instead students create a portfolio of college level work for evaluation. Students will investigate processes, materials and ideas. They will experiment, and revise and finally communicate their ideas through the completion of 20 artworks. A qualifying portfolio score can earn a student college credit and or advanced placement. The AP Studio Art Program consists of four portfolios — 2-D Design, 3-D Design, Photography, and Drawing — corresponding to common college foundation courses. ◆ This year-long course immerses students in smartphone, digital, and traditional black-and-white film photography. Students explore composition, lighting, and image design while experiencing multiple genres such as portrait, landscape, still life, documentary, and abstract photography. They also gain hands-on darkroom experience as they process film, create negatives and contact sheets, and produce archival-quality silver gelatin prints. In the second semester, students advance to SLR film photography and refine their skills in manual controls, exposure, printmaking, and advanced darkroom techniques.
