September 9-13
Dear FES Families,
I am so proud of our students and their hard work during our 4th week of school. We are off to an amazing start and it is truly impressive to see just how much our students are already learning and doing in their classes. We have the BEST kids!
We have had the chance to enjoy out outdoor areas as the weather has finally cooperated and allowed us to have some time at recess and even starting the day with play outside with our 3rd and 4th grade students this morning! The students who arrived between 7:25 and 7:45 were able to have some time on our playground before beginning a day of learning and did a great job of being responsible and kind to one another.
We also began our first round of MAP testing which will provide us with baseline data that will guide us in meeting your child's needs for growth and enrichment! Our teachers have begun meeting each week to review student assessment data and to plan for small group instruction to enrich, reteach, or support the learning needs of students during their small group time or flex time.
We have also kicked off our Booster Fun Run event this week and are grateful for to our FES families for your support. This fundraiser will provide us with teacher grants for classroom resources, activities, and campus projects, as well as enrichment activities for our students. We can't wait for our Glow Run event next week! Reminder- students should wear their PTA provided glow run shirt next Friday for the glow run!
September is packed with exciting activities and events including our Glow Run Fundraiser, our Book Fair, and Lunch with Grandparents! Be sure to see the information below to invite your child's grandparent or special person to join us on one of our two days of celebration and pre-register them so that we are able to facilitate a smooth check in process.
Thank you, FES families for your support, your partnership, and for sharing your amazing students with us each day!
In Falcon Spirit!
Courtney Brandel
Principal, Florence Elementary School
We ended the day with the Booster Fun Run team talking about being leaders as a part of the Castle Quest. Booster team will be joining us for a few minutes during co-curr and talking about leadership and achieving goals. They will be issuing challenges each day for our students in support of our fundraising goals, so be on the lookout for more information.
We love having our FES parents join us for lunch! In fact, this week, we even had some grandparents who were able to come and enjoy some time in our cafeteria. We have a designated area for our parents/ visitors to eat with their child, and from what we have seen so far this year, the middle table is officially our Chic Fil A table!
We have loved beginning our day with play and today, our 3rd and 4th grade students earned time outside! They did a great job of beginning the day with activity, movement, and fun!

Nurse Sue will be conducting hearing and vision screenings on September 16-17 for Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade and new students in 2nd and 4th grade. This will take place during the school day. If your child wears glasses or hearing support devices, please make sure they are wearing them for their examination. Please reach out to Nurse Sue susan.pieler@kellerisd.net if you have any questions.
All KISD students participate in the NWEA MAP Test which is an assessment that provides us with standards based data that allows us to measure each student's growth throughout the year. This tool provides teachers with a variety of reports and information that help them to address the unique needs of our students. The test is adaptive, and adjusts based on the response of each student, which provides us with information to determine which skills and concepts they have mastered and which they may need additional reinforcement. MAP data "talks" with many of our resources, such as Dreambox, to allow us to personalize these practice activities based on student needs. For more information about MAP, please watch the video on the the NWEA site: https://www.nwea.org/resource-center/resource/what-is-map-growth/ or visit with your child's teacher for more information about your child's progress. We will inform you when your child's results are available in Aeries and teachers will be sharing the family report with you when those become available.
While we appreciate a phone call letting us know your child is absent, with the updated Attendance procedures, we will now request a written explanation of absences for each day they were absent. This may be an email sent to Tyler.Lamon@kellerisd.net or a written note that is sent upon your child's return.
Parents are always welcome at FES! If you are interested in volunteering, you must fill out the Keller ISD Volunteer Application. All FES visitors are required to enter at door #1, go through the front office, provide picture identification, and obtain a visitor badge before proceeding to any part of the building which must be worn in a visible area for the duration of the time on campus. Office staff will verify the visitor is a parent, guardian, or approved contact for a student.
Guests are only allowed in designated areas to minimize disruption of the learning environment and may not go throughout the building, to the playground, or classrooms.
Guests are required to exit the building through the office during school hours. We value and appreciate guests and all volunteers at FES!

🚨 Security- Visitor Check-In for Fun Run
As a part of our security procedures, all parents and guests must check in following the procedures below. All parents/visitors must bring their government issued ID (Drivers license, or state ID).
All new families who have not yet checked in to our visitor check-in (Raptor system) yet or those who are new to FES and have not yet checked into the Raptor system will need to check in at the front office using the Raptor system. Please plan to arrive early to ensure plenty of time to check in, or if you want to beat the crowd, we encourage you to come at any time Monday-Wednesday to check-in to the raptor system to avoid the long line the day of the event. Once you have checked in, you will wait in the main hallway until it is time to go into the cafeteria for our event.
All returning families who checked in using raptor in already this year this year will be able to check in at one of the two tables at our main entrance. (You will present your ID and we will check you off of the list.)
Parent Seating and Exit from the Event
We will have parent and spectator seating available in the Stage area as our event will take place in the cafeteria and gym areas.
If you arrive early, we will ask you to wait in the main hallway until the last group has cleared out. Due to parking limitations, we will have the overflow parking lot open and we ask that once your child has completed the run, please kindly exit through door 20 (through the gym) to allow for the next grade level's parents to have parking availability. Students will return with their classes to finish the school day.
Attendance Reminder
*Please note, we encouirage all students to remain at school for the duration of the school day, as we will still be conducting regular classes and learning throughout the day and will celebrate together by sliming Mrs. Brandel, Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Price at the end of the day! If you choose to check your child out early, you will need to do so through our front office and it would be counted as a partial day absence according to our attendance policies. After their fun run, your child will return to their classroom with their class and would be called down once you have signed them out, following our regular early release procedures. We appreciate your patience in this process as our front office staff members will be prioritizing the check-in of parents and guests first and then will call down students after check in has completed for each grade level.
We welcome our grandparents/ important person to join our students during their student's 30 minute lunch time and then, during their recess time to visit library where they can enjoy browsing the book fair, share with your student some some special activities facilitated by our PTA, and enjoy the special time together. While we love having our FES parents join us throughout the year, this is a special day reseved for our grandparents and special guests, and would ask that our parents choose a different day to join your child for lunch to ensure that we have enough room for our grandparents and special guests.
Required- Pre Registration Form for Raptor Check-in
Parents, please complete the following form if you and/or a family member would like to join us for our Grandparent's/ Important Person Luncheon. In order to ensure a quick check in process on the day of the event, we will pre-check all guests in through our Raptor system and will have their visitor sticker ready pon their arrival. PLEASE COMPLETE ONE FORM PER STUDENT by no later than Monday, September 16 to allow time for processing all the information. You will need the full name, date of birth, and driver's license number and state issued in order to pre-register your grandparent/ guest.
This pre-registration allows us to plan ahead to ensure a successful day! In order to ensure that there is plenty of space for an enjoyable time for all, we strongly encourage that families with last names beginning with A-K to attend on Thursday, and families with last names beginning with L-Z to attend on Friday. For the same reason, while we love having our parents on campus for different events, we kindly ask that we reserve this special day for our grandparents and important guests.

Bringing Lunch
Grandparents/ Important Guests are welcomed to bring lunch for their student. Please note, however, that they may not share with any child aside from their own. Additionally, if Nurse Sue communicated allergies in your child's class at the beginning of the year, please communicate these allergy specifications with your child's special guest ahead of time.
Guest Arrival- Check in at Door 7 Courtyard
When our grandparents arrive, we ask that they bring their ID. Our special guests will check in at our sign in table located at the door 7 gate (K,1,2 regular entrance by the library). Grandparents will wait in the courtyard area until their students' grade level's lunch time in order to allow for the transition and cleaning between groups and then will proceed to the cafeteria to meet their grandchild. We will have designated tables that have signs on them specifically for our special guests.
Cafeteria Lunch
If your special guest or child will be ordering a meal, please be sure to pre-pay to FES Cafeteria through your child's Sodexo account. They will accompany their gandchild through the line and pick up their lunch as they go through. This will be denoted on their tag as they come in, so they don't need to do anything extra to receive a lunch. (https://www.schoolcafe.com/KELLERISD)
Cafeteria Menu for Grandparents Day Luncheon To be confirmed by Cafeteria Early Next week
Thursday, September 19th:
Friday September 20th:
Please note, for confidentiality and to maintain the learning environment throughout our campus, guests will not be able to visit classrooms on this day, and upon completion of book fair, fun, students will go to the return location near the library and main stairway, where they will give their goodbye hugs. Grandparents may then exit through door 8, by the library and exit through the courtyard.
On September 18th, we invite families to come and shop the bookfair from 4:00-6:00 PM and will have a Frios Popsicle truck on site!
The Book Fair is coming up! Time to set up your eWallet and start previewing. Whether you're starting your holiday shopping, contributing to your teacher's bookshelf, or searching for the perfect fall reads for your child, you'll find it all at the book fair. Thank you for supporting our kids, and happy reading! Access the Book Fair link below.
Florence Elementary will be hosting a week long book fair from September 16th - 20th. The book fair will contain reading materials from multiple grades/reading levels and genres, and students will be provided with an opportunity to visit the book fair during the school day to preview and/or purchase books. An after-school family night will also be scheduled to allow parents an opportunity to visit the book fair with their children, in order to preview items and make purchases. Proceeds of this event will go to the campus library and help provide books and resources for teachers and students.
Keller ISD recognizes that every family and student is different, and parents have different expectations regarding what literature is appropriate for their children to read. That is why we encourage all parents to discuss reading selections as a family. Just as parents have the right to opt their children out of a school activity/class that conflicts with their religious or moral beliefs (KISD Board Policy EMB (Legal), parents may request their children to not access campus book fairs.
Keller ISD has an “opt-out” policy, whereby the parents/guardians must sign a permission form to withdraw their child from participating in the book fair without an adult family member present. If you do not wish for your child to participate in the book fair, please fill out the form below and submit it by September 13th. Your child will receive alternate lessons/activities to complete while students are visiting the book fair. Please note: children who do not complete the opt out form will be provided an opportunity to participate in the book fair. If you do wish for your child to participate in the book fair no action needs to be taken.
Sincerely,
Jessica Sustaita-Librarian
*If you do not wish for your child to participate in the Book Fair preview during their library class time, please complete this form and your child will have an alternate activity during the book fair activiites: https://forms.gle/7BcovLaC4JL5vahS8

September
Sodexo has received several concerns regarding the printed menu reflecting options which are either substituted or changed completely on the serving line due to product unavailability or use of State provided commodity items. While Sodexo strives to minimize the number of changes to the menu, they are still at the mercy of product manufacture shortages and logistical challenges from all providers which places a burden on the program to provide the menu as previously planned.
To improve the communication of menu changes Sodexo has recently launched new and improved online menus for Keller ISD through Nutrislice at https://kellerisd.nutrislice.com/menus-eula . Be on the lookout, our next menu will be through this website!
This change will provide students, staff and families the most up-to-date printable and digital menus that are reflective of any changes that need to be made to the menus.
