December 16- December 20
January 7-10
Dear FES Families,
We are just one week away from the middle of the school year and FES is filled with the holiday spirit! From candy cane grams, to special activities, there is a joyous spirit in the air!
This week, we have continued with MAP testing and we look forward to looking into that data to see the growth of our students this year and find out how we can support their learning needs in the upcoming months! We also hosted our FES Spelling Bee and are proud of the hard work of all of our participants.
I hope that you have a great weekend and look forward to an exciting week of learning, Nutcrackers, festivities, and celebration next week! We will not be sending another newsletter next week, so be on the lookout on January 10 for our next edition after your child's return on January 7th.
As we take a break from our daily routines in the upcoming weeks, I hope you are able to share in creating memories as a family, experience the blessing of giving, and spend time enjoying this holiday season! However your family chooses to celebrate, may your holiday be filled with peace, love, and joy!
In Falcon Spirit,
Courtney Brandel
Principal, Florence Elementary School
Congratulations to all of our Florence School Spelling Bee participants! We had a morning of I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E spelling fun today as our 3rd and 4th grade finalists each took turns spelling a word from the list of words they have been given. All of our participants did an outstanding job! After 7 rounds, two remained:
First Runner Up: Elliot Lebel (3rd Grade)
Spelling Bee Champion: Owen Boto (3rd Grade)
Owen will represent Florence at the upcoming Keller ISD spelling bee!
Thank you, Mrs. Howell, for being our spelling bee sponsor and guiding our spellers to confidently take the stage through practice, guidance and encouragement! Thank you, also to our caller, Mrs. Rice, and to our judges, Mrs. Sargent, Mrs. Nayfa, and Mr. Crawford.
Our 4th Grade Artwork is showcased in our trophy case in our main entry! We are grateful to Mrs. Wilson for guiding our artists this semester!
Candy Gram Sales have begun!

Thank you to Doty Real Estate and Cherry Creek Mortgage for hosting our staff Christmas party! It was a festive night of fun and togetherness and we are grateful to these two businesses for not only welcoming our staff into their beautiful facility, but also for treating our staff to a festive evening of food and fun! We are grateful for the heart that your businesses have for supporting our amazing teachers and staff!
Thank you, PTA Hospitality, for providing a warm and caring hot chocolate and apple cider treat for our teachers and staff on Wednesday! It was a refreshing and thoughtful treat during the week!
We love celebrating the tradition of excellence at FES! As a part of that process, we will be recognizing our amazing staff members and would like your help.
Please share the name and information of the staff member you feel who is deserving of recognition along with some words that share the reason they are being recognized. Please note, your response with be shared with the staff member and may be featured in our publications/ social media and any student names that are included may be omitted for confidentiality.

Every year we ask all our students to bring in their special Nutcrackers to be displayed for all the FES students to see! Your student may bring their Nutcracker to school beginning on Monday, through Wednesday. Students should take the nutcracker to their classroom and they will be collected and moved to the display area. Please make sure that you have the nutcracker labeled with the student’s name, grade and teacher on the bottom of its base. The nutcrackers will go home with your student at the end of the day on Thursday or on Friday. We can’t wait to see all what your student will bring! On Nutcracker day, students will see all of the nutcracker and will be particpating in Nutcracker themed games during their Co-Curr Time.
Volunteers are welcome to join in helping with the Nutcracker Day fun during co-curr. We are also in need of face painters for Nutcracker day. Please use the link below if you have time to help out on Thursday December 19th:

Please note that Friday, December 20, is an early release day for all students. Students that ride a bus will be dismissed at 11:45am, with walkers and car riders following. The FES cafeteria will serve a sack lunch, but students will not be required to eat lunch at school on this day. Thank you for making arrangements for your child to be picked up earlier than normal to start the holiday break!
If you wish to sign out your child early on Friday, please check them out with their teacher. *Note: any departure before 11:45 will be considered as an early check-out and marked as a parent note absence.
*Due to classroom capacity, FES students will only be permitted to attend their own classroom party (not that of a younger or older sibling) and should remain with their class until dismissal or until their parent checks them out to go home. Future falcon siblings are welcomed to join in the fun!
All grades for first semester will be posted and viewable Friday, January 10th. Please take a look and reach out to your child's teacher with any questions you may have.
As we begin our second semester, students will participate in the following Co-Curr classes: PE, Music and Theatre.
Students have enjoyed our Art class with Mrs. Wilson during first semester. She and Mrs. Klein will switch locations to teach the second portion of Co-Curr. Mrs. Wilson will be teaching Art at Friendship Elementary and Mrs. Kleine will be coming here and will teach our Theatre Co-Curr class. Thank you, Mrs. Wilson, for cultivating the talents of our artists this semster!
Please be sure that your child is coming to school with weather appropriate clothing including a jacket or a coat, as they will continue to attend recess outside when the temperature falls within our district policy. Please be sure to label all coats, jackets, and winter accessories with your child's name as this is the time of year where our lost and found tends to grow!
As we monitor the temperature and weather, we may move to an alternate or indoor recess plan, depending on the circumstances. Under district policy, students will not go outside if temperatures or heat index are at or above 98 degrees Fahrenheit or if the wind-chill or temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. If temperatures are between 32-40 degrees outside activity will be limited to 20 minutes. If Ozone levels reach red of purple, there will be no outside activity. Students will participate in activities in the classrooms or flex space and will have a choice of games, hands on activities, movement and other options. (Not an iPad time)
Florence Student Council will be selling Candy Cane Grams Dec. 13-19th before school for $1 each. Proceeds will benefit Florence Elementary. Funds last year were used to purchase recess equipment.
Save the date! We are excited to announce that The Big Event is returning on April 12, 2025! This districtwide day of service is open to all Florence Elementary School students, their families, teachers, and staff members. Learn more about The Big Event at www.KellerISD.net/BigEvent. Sodexo has received several concerns regarding the printed menu reflecting options which are either substituted or changed completely on the serving line due to product unavailability or use of State provided commodity items. While Sodexo strives to minimize the number of changes to the menu, they are still at the mercy of product manufacture shortages and logistical challenges from all providers which places a burden on the program to provide the menu as previously planned.
To improve the communication of menu changes Sodexo has recently launched new and improved online menus for Keller ISD through Nutrislice at https://kellerisd.nutrislice.com/menus-eula .
This change will provide students, staff and families the most up-to-date printable and digital menus that are reflective of any changes that need to be made to the menus.
Did you hear? There are FIVE choices for lunch each day this year!
https://kellerisd.sodexomyway.com/
What time is breakfast? Breakfast will begin at 7:25. The line will close at 7:50 for students to be in class at 7:55.
What is offered? This school year Sodexo will be offering 3 hot side options and 2 cold side options.
How do I add money to my child’s cafeteria account? You may place money on your child's lunch account by setting up an account for them on School Cafe. The link is below and you will need your student's ID # to do so.

While we appreciate a phone call letting us know your child is absent, with the updated Attendance procedures, we will now request a written explanation of absences for each day they were absent.
This may be an email sent to Tyler.Lamon@kellerisd.net or a written note that is sent upon your child's return. An absence is considered to be a partial absence any time that a student leaves early or arrives later than the first 15 minutes of the day and parents may utilze a parent excuse for these if there is not documentation. Please see the Keller ISD Attendance 101 for more information. https://www.kellerisd.net/students-families/resources/students-families-resources/attendance-truancy
The KISD Math department has put together a guide for parents to see what your child is learning in math, including an overview, important concepts and common misconceptions. It also includes ideas of how to support your child's learning at home. Simply click on your child's grade level link to see the curriculum overview and information.
Be sure that your email is correct in your infosnap to be sure you receive all of our Blackboard communications (emails and texts).
