AP MUSIC THEORY

Length/Credit:      One Year, 1 credit

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 11-12 

Students are expected to take the AP Exam. 

Students will read, notate, compose, analyze, perform and listen to music. Students will listen to musical works attentively and analytically, developing their “musical memory” and their ability to articulate responses to formal, stylistic, and aesthetic qualities of works. Performance, using singing, keyboard and the student’s primary performance media is also included.

BEGINNER GUITAR

FAM-3020

Length/Credit:      One Semester, 0.5 credit

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 9-12

Students will learn the basics of playing guitar at a beginning level through strumming, studying music notation, chord symbols, and instructor modeling. The course is intended for students who wish to study music but do not currently play in band, play in orchestra, sing in choir, or have experience playing guitar.

FRESHMAN BAND

In this course, students will improve proficiency in all aspects of reading and performing instrumental music. Through the rehearsal and study of quality wind band literature, students will strengthen individual playing techniques and skills; learn about the theory, history, and vocabulary of music; demonstrate confidence and poise during public performances; and learn to work collaboratively as a member of the ensemble. This course emphasizes the importance of participation, appreciation, and support of music for life.

VARSITY BAND

Placement in Symphonic Band is by audition; this is the highest-level auditioned band.

In this course, students will improve proficiency in all aspects of reading and performing instrumental music. Through the rehearsal and study of quality wind band literature, students will strengthen individual playing techniques and skills; learn about the theory, history, and vocabulary of music; demonstrate confidence and poise during public performances; and learn to work collaboratively as a member of the ensemble. This course emphasizes the importance of participation, appreciation, and support of music for life.

FRESHMAN ORCHESTRA

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 9 student who plays an orchestra instrument 

Freshman Orchestra is open to 9th-grade students who desire knowledge of string instrument playing. Students will receive guidance in techniques for proper tone production, pitch, rhythm, posture, dynamics, and performance. Freshman Orchestra is also a class designed to help build self-esteem, cooperation, and life skills through the process of playing an instrument individually and with others. Freshman Orchestra also affords the students the opportunity to participate in concerts, All-State Orchestra, festivals, solo/ensemble contest, field trips, and travel opportunities.

Symphony Orchestra is also a class designed to help build self-esteem, cooperation, and life skills through the process of playing an instrument individually and with others. Symphony Orchestra also affords the students the opportunity to participate in concerts, All-State Orchestra, festivals, solo/ensemble contest, field trips, and travel opportunities.

Learning culminates with a demonstration of confidence and poise during public ensemble performances. Students develop an awareness of the arts as a vital part of lifelong learning.


INTERMEDIATE CHOIR

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 10-12 (group makeup varies by school)

Placement in Intermediate Choir is by audition (except at LHS).

Additional outside hours are required.

Through learning and performing a wide variety of intermediate choral repertoire as an ensemble, students further develop music literacy skills, musical terms and notation, and vocal technique. Learning culminates with a demonstration of confidence and poise during public ensemble performances. Students develop a deeper awareness of the arts as a vital part of lifelong learning.

ADVANCED CHOIR

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 11-12, select grade 10

Placement in Advanced Choir is by audition.

Additional outside hours are required.

LHS students only: Additional lunch ensemble participation required.

Through learning and performing a wide variety of advanced choral repertoire as an ensemble, students refine music literacy skills, vocal technique and reinforce understanding of musical terms and notation. Learning culminates with a demonstration of confidence and poise during advanced public ensemble performances. Students demonstrate leadership and an applied awareness of the arts as a vital part of lifelong learning.
