INTRODUCTION TO ROBOTICS

CTE-3120

Length/Credit:      One Semester, Two Hour block, 1.0 credits

Prerequisite:         None, Open to grade 9-12

Location:                  Offered at CTE Academy only

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of robotics as it teaches science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students will learn how to use feedback from sensors, applied mathematics and measurement to program their robot to navigate in its environment. Students will have the opportunity to complete multiple challenges involving guided research, problem solving and working in teams.

Pathway to Engineering Program

The PLTW engineering program provides students the opportunity to earn up to 4 college credits while developing critical thinking skills through hands-on project-based learning, preparing them to take on real-world challenges. Students use cutting-edge technology, equipment and materials to complete engaging projects such as the design of an alternative energy project, and applying biological and engineering concepts related to biomechanics.  Students should be concurrently enrolled in college preparatory math and science courses.  Students can earn college credit towards an engineering degree while in high school.

ENGINEERING I- INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGNPLTW

Length/Credit:      One Semester, Two Hour block, 1 credit

Prerequisite:         Algebra I, Open to grade 10-12

Location:                  Offered at CTE Academy only

Students are introduced to the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to identify and design solutions to a variety of real problems. They work both individually and in collaborative teams to develop and document design solutions with 3D computer modeling using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Students apply computational methods to inform design by developing algorithms, performing statistical analyses, and developing mathematical models. Students build competency in professional engineering practices including project management, peer review, and environmental impact analysis as part of a collaborative design team. Ethical issues related to professional practice and product development are also taught.

ENGINEERING II- PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERINGPLTW

Length/Credit:      One Semester, Two Hour block, 1 credit | Physical Science elective, lab science

Prerequisite:         Geometry & Introduction to Engineering Design, Open to grade 10-12

Location:                  Offered at CTE Academy only

This course meets the fourth year science requirement for the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship.

In Principles of Engineering, students explore a broad range of engineering disciplines and careers and solve real-world engineering problems, which engage and challenge. Students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. With a project-, problem-based (APB) instructional approach, students advance from completing structured activities to solving open-ended projects and problems that provide opportunities to develop planning and technical documentation skills, as well as in-demand, transportable skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and ethical reasoning.
