The Flame has prided itself on being an outlet and encouraging the expression of the artistic and literary talent of Jim Thorpe's student body. The Flame accepts poetry, descriptive essays, short stories, photography, digital art, and hand-drawn art created by students, to be uploaded to the website and published in our print edition.
The magazine was born in 2005 when several students approached our principal, Mr. Thomas Lesisko, with the desire to begin a poetry magazine. With no budget the first year, The Flame was produced on a color printer and hand-assembled by members of the staff. The Flame was published every school year until 2019. From 2020 to present, The Flame moved to an online publication. This year, it is our goal to produce a print magazine again.
During the month of March, embrace themes of luck and Celtic mythology with the following specific prompts provided by The Flame:
Ode to My Lucky Charms- Write an ode to or submit photography or art pertaining to something that brings luck and good tidings to your life. To some, this is the rabbit’s foot, the horseshoe hanging over the doorway, or a penny. Inspiration taken from these ideas or your own is welcomed all the same.
Snakes & Heroes- Inspired by the tale of St. Patrick saving Ireland, assemble a story which incorporates a striking hero or heroic action, or a prominent role for snakes.
Saints- Put together a captivating origin story of a saint of your design, and include what he or she would be the patron saint of.
Once upon a time, there was a young little girl with a sweet smile. Everyone knew she saw the joy in everything and believed the world was capable of no harm. Her grandmother especially adored her, as her grandmother saw her as a kind and innocent soul. She even crafted a red hood that perfectly wrapped around the little girl's head.
