The rain pounded on us, cutting right through my vest. I could only see dark clouds, lightning among them, and Ruby’s wings beating harder up and down.
“Faster, faster!” | screamed, my voice hoarse from the previous battle.
But we were too slow. As Ruby found the landing spot, I saw him there, waiting. He had his bow strung, ready to fire.
“No! Fly, Ruby!” I begged, but his arrow struck her heart, sending both of us tumbling towards the ground.
When I awoke from the fall, I saw his face.
All he said was, “I won.”
I have twenty-four hours left. I’ve been running for four days. I’m down to my last hours. Everything hurts and I haven’t consumed anything in days. I’m sitting in a pond now, finally resting. I hear loud noises and panic. I run behind a tree. I see ‘it’, my creation. I slowly walk towards the lake. I step on something and it makes a noise. I look downward and start to hear helicopters. I then look up in panic. It’s staring right at me. The last thing I remember is me thinking, I should have been paying attention. And then…
Did they ever wonder about King Midas’ daughter? The girl who turned to gold when her father touched her, though she never remained gold for long. Free from her prison of metal, Apollo handed her a silver dagger, whispering vengeance to her. She traveled up the palace steps, into her father’s bedchambers, and cut both his cursed hands so none would suffer from his greed again. A brazen bull was melted into a cup, and from it, she made him drink the molten bronze. History will say he drank bull’s blood, but never of the daughter that fed him it.
I had to run. To get as far away as I could. It was snowing down, the flakes practically cutting into my skin. I couldn’t go back to that awful place. I didn’t know where I was supposed to go, but I couldn’t stay in that prison. I knew the tracker would go off soon, and they’d find me. After I’d gained some distance, I slashed open my leg and ripped the tracker out. I caught my breath. Suddenly, I heard sirens. I ran, ran until couldn’t breathe. I was so tired. I found somewhere to hide and collapsed.
I knew we couldn’t hide forever. We had been running from the law for months. Hiding in plain sight was a bad idea, but there was nowhere else to go. The sky above was darkening as if giving a warning sign. We walked in the shadows, with our heads down. The voices around us got louder, signaling that it was time to leave.
“We need to get out of here,” he whispered.
A shot was fired in the distance. We had been found.
“Now.”
I grabbed his hand, not daring to let go, and we ran.
I only have 24 hours. It’s dark outside. I can hear thunder from afar. I am home alone and bored, so I decide to search for some fun games to play on my own. I come across this one game called ‘Evil’. My brother talked often about it, and he said it’s a good one. I don’t get scared easily.
I put the disc into the PlayStation and as soon as I start the game, all lights go off. Now I am hearing screaming and a countdown appears on the screen. I have 24 hours to play this game…
It was only a matter of time before they came for us. I broke the rules and now we have to pay for it. They took my entire family for something I did. In the middle of a snowstorm was the worst time for this; I couldn’t even see an inch in front of me. I heard a loud yell that sounded like my mother. I made my way toward the sound of painful yelling. I saw a distant light behind a few trees. As I got closer, the light turned off. I heard a twig behind me snap…
