The History of Veterans Day
November 11, 1947, was the first Veterans Day. Veterans Day, formally known as Armistice Day, is a Federal holiday and was first celebrated in Birmingham, Alabama. Veterans Day was started in remembrance of World War I. This special day pays tribute to all American veterans- living or deceased- but especially to the living. Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, about 167,000 were still alive as of 2022. Every Veterans Day, Arlington National Cemetery, holds an annual memorial service. It is home to the graves of over 400,000 people, most of whom served in the military.
