Targets: 

This week in math we will continue our first unit in Chapter 1, single-step and multi-step equations. Students will learn the definitions of a variable, solution, and equation. We will start multi-step equations and begin to learn when equations may have more than one solution or no solutions.

Algebra:

Targets: 

This week in algebra,  we will continue Chapter 1 learning about single and multi-step equations. Students will be familiar with the terms variable, inverse operation, equivalent equations, solution, and linear equations. We will keep using reciprocals and learning when equations have infinite solutions or no solution. We will spend a little time reviewing before taking a quiz on 1.1-1.3. We will then move forward to our second half of the chapter, absolute value equations.

Language Arts: 

Targets: This week, we will wrap up our email etiquette mini-unit and  will begin reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. This dystopian sci-fi novel is about a 12 year old boy named Jonas who is assigned to the distinguished role of the Receiver in his community. Throughout the reading of this story, we will explore important themes and analyze Jonas' character development.

Side note: If you have read The Giver,  please refrain from sharing any spoilers!

Science: 

Learning Targets: 

In the upcoming week we will learn how to make a mental model, practice techniques with a scale and graduated cylinder, and build a particle model for matter.

Homework:  Unit Targets (Green Sheet) - #'s 2, 7, 9-11 - Due: Thursday, September 3.

Social Studies: This week we will give our presentations on Native American civilizations.  We will then move on to Spanish exploration of the New World and how the conquest of the Aztecs and Incas changed the course of human and American history.
