Once students have designed your island they will need to advertise the plots of land that their company plans to sell. This advertisement should show the prospective buyer the different sized lots available, as well as include the unit price per square meter and show an algebraic equation that prospective buyers can use to determine the cost of plots they are interested in.
-Drawing (Mathematical Representation)
The task is to create an artificial island. The island will be created in a bay where the
average depth of the water is five meters. Step one will be to determine the shape and
size of the island they plan to create. Then they must use mathematics to figure out the
volume of sand and rock that will be needed to create an island of that size (in meters
cubed) Once they have constructed the island it is time to use mathematics to divide the land into beachfront plots of varying sizes that can be used for private residential property or hotel property.
-Environmental Impact Study
This task is to research and write a paper about the potential environmental impact
that the changes to the physical environment may have on fish and animal populations
living in the Persian Gulf near the islands. Included will be research to gather empirical
evidence to support arguments.
-Multimedia Presentation
Create a presentation that uses images from the construction and development of the
Palm Islands in Dubai. The presentation should help the audience understand what it
will take to create a similar artificial island.
-Oral Presentation
Create an oral presentation that explains why the shape of a palm tree
was used to create the Palm Islands. Also explain both the cultural and mathematical
reasons for the shape you chose to create your island. During discussion students
should indicate how many pieces of land are beachfront, the dimensions and area of
the plots on your island, and the types and sizes of property that can be
accommodated (hotels, house sizes, etc.)
-Programming Flowchart
The agency wants to create a real estate website that highlights the pieces of land
available on the artificial island. The team will need to create a programming flow chart that is a diagram that will be sent to a software engineer who will be developing virtual tour of land for the agency’s website. The engineer will need to create the flowchart should include a start point and an endpoint, decisions that need to take place along the way, the direction for the flow of logic, and processes that need to take place.
Students will create a beautiful new park in their community that will feature plenty of space and includes a working ecosystem where producers, consumers, and decomposers will work together as a food chain. Students will become park designers and work with the mayor and other landscape architects to design and create this new community outdoor space.
Students will publicly exhibit the following:
-Illustrate and label a picture of a park.
- Create a brochure that highlights all the parts of their park ecosystem.
- Write a letter to the local newspaper to inform them about the new park and its offer to the community.
- Students will create a PowerPoint to inform the mayor about the importance of a working ecosystem in the new park with a partner.
- Create a diorama of a new park design and include some parts of the working ecosystem.
- Write in a journal what they learned about the working parts of an ecosystem.
