Dr. Michael Conti Project Gallery Walk 2021

Welcome to our Virtual Project Gallery Walk!

While this challenging school year has been a test of our resilience, the collaboration between our teachers & parents remained stronger than ever, allowing us to provide students with continuity of instruction, despite a year of remote learning. Together, we managed to keep our students engaged and hold true to our school motto: “At Conti we believe we can achieve.”

As you know, Project Based Learning (PBL) has been an important component of our instructional program for many years. Through PBL, our goal is to provide our students with authentic learning experiences that go beyond the textbook. Years of research and our own practice have demonstrated that students learn best and retain knowledge more effectively when they are intellectually engaged in projects that spark their interest, challenge their minds, and call them to action. Students are prompted to reflect on issues or problems that impact their community and for which they can contribute to a solution. PBL helps students develop their critical thinking skills, creativity, and empathy for the plight of others.  Our most notable PBL-STEM project resulted in the concrete water planters that you see in front of our school building. Back in 2016, a conversation, an idea, inspired Conti middle school students to seek a solution to the flooding problem at PS #5. Five years later, this wonderful project is still making news!  Here's a March 12, 2021, article that explains the significantly positive impact that a Conti PBL project had on the surrounding neighborhood:

Although remote learning presented a logistical challenge to effective PBL implementation, we made it work to the best of our ability.  This could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and parents. We are proud of our students’ accomplishments and are excited to share our virtual Project Gallery Walk, compiled by our amazing CIT/STEM guru Mr. Lou De Carlo.

When you enter our virtual Project Gallery Walk home tab you will find six tabs:

The PGW 2021 tab will take you to all the PBL projects by grade level;

The Driving Questions are the open ended questions that guided student learning and exploration, also by grade level;

The Project Overview details each grade level’s PBL project design or essential elements such as NJ Student Learning Standards addressed project authenticity, student voice/choice, and applicability to STEM.

The PGW Archive will take you on a virtual trip down memory lane of our last six Project Gallery Walks.

In “Year in the life of Pre-K” tab, we share wonderful activities that our Pre-K teachers and parents did with our three and four year old students to help them develop decision making and problem solving skills- all precursors to high quality PBL.

And finally, last but NOT least, please share your feedback, we would love to hear from you.

         Enjoy!
